Coins Of India - Mughal Coins

Thanks Bacchus2 for your keen interest. I have a few more photos of similar coins. I shall be posting them serially as often as possible.
This coin also is of Humayun. This is from Agra mint,issued in 942 AH and weighs 9.3gms.




AKBAR
Akbar the Great ruled from 1556 AD to 1605. His conquests resulted in lots of mints around. He used to take a mint along with his expeditions to issue coins for those regions immediately. His unit coppers were called dams. 1/2dam was called Nisfi,1/4 called Damra and 1/8 known as Damri. Given below are two Nisfis issued from Narnul and Lahore.

Narnul issue--weighs 10gms


Lahore issue--weighs 10gms. This coin has some specialties. Akbar founded a calendar called "Ilahi". The year count started with his reign. Coins of those times have the month of issue written on them. This coin was issued in the month of "Di" in the Ilahi year 36, meaning in the month of Di of the 36th year of his rule.

Now let me post a few more copper coins of Akbar.

This is a dam from the mint Allahbad.Mint name is written as "Alahabaz".Issued in year 31 of Ilahi.



This is a coin belonging to "Tanka" series from Gobindpur mint."Ilahi" is written in a different style.This is a half tanka and holds a legend,"Tanka Akbar Shahi". One Tanka weighs about 40gms and is equal to two dams.



Here is a coin from the "Tanki"series.This coin is four tankis (The legend "(Chau) tanki"meaning four tankis) and weighs 16.4gms.Mint name - Ahmadabad.This was minted in the month of "Farwardin" of Ilahi 4x.

6).Rupee with Zodical sign Leo. Such coins were withdrawn and destroyed during Shah Jahan's reign. Possession of zodiacal coins is said to have been then punished with decapitation.

Wow--what a collection of Mughal coins!
I consider posts like this one some of the best ever on this forum.
The coins are presented well, with a lot of explanation of the details of the coin and the ruler at the time.
I always enjoy learning something new, and hope you will continue posting coins.

@ DVCollector:) thanks for your encouraging comments.I had no idea as to the reception of these posts.I have a few more images of coins of the Mughals, Delhi Sultans,Bahmanis, Gujarat sultans,Kashmir sultans and very few ones of Bengal sultans also that I have kept to post. I have a collection of Princely state coins and ancient coins of India mainly from the South but I haven't yet captured them on images. Due to paucity of time, that might take a year at least before I can finish with them. And since I am not that good with taking full advantage of computers you know what happens. I am extremely happy to know that these posts are helpful.As you have remarked in one of your previous posts in the topic "Introduce yourself", I am in the process of compiling literature on Indian numismatics. I have plans to publish these coins in a book on them in my regional language 'Malayalam' first and then in English as well. This is because Malayalam does not have a good book on Indian numismatics, esp. sultanate coins. Preliminary works are all finished. Thank you once more for sparing your time to post those encouraging comments.

Akbar lost his empire and would not ever have ruled but for his tutor,Bairam Khan. Hemu, the general of the Suris attacked Delhi when Akbar was away from the capital.He took the throne and crowned himself as "Vikramaditya".Akbar was hesitant to retaliate immediately, but Bairam Khan sternly argued otherwise. Finally the second war of Panipat was fought which went in favour of Akbar. Otherwise, Mughal rule would have been a different history.
