This looks like a thread to could really go off the rails rather quickly .
To throw a bit of humour into this ..forward to
2028 Congress introduces a bill . "Make Lincoln
Great Again " After a hiatus of 3 years the House
seeks the reintroduction of The Lincoln Penny .
The one cent coin should have ended years ago .
That said America ..enjoy the next 4 years ,you
are certainly entertaining the ROW !

How did the elimination of the penny go over in Canada? From all accounts I've heard it went quite smoothly but I'd be really interested in hearing the perspective of somebody who lived through it.

When we eliminated the One Cent Coin
in 2012 , the reasoning was it was costing
far more to produce them than .01 CAD,
which at the time was on par with USD .
In the end of production there was a ceremony
with the last Cent being struck by the Finance
Minister .
The RCM got smart and packaged rolls that
brought a nice profit .
To be really honest , here in Canada , no one
really missed the annoying things as they had
long passed having any value or usage .
Convenience stores and such had for the
previous two to three years 2009-11 , a little dish
by the cash register , aptly known as take a penny
leave a penny .
By early 2013 they were all gone from circulation.
The concept of "rounding " when using cash really
does work up here . " Pennies " are not missed!
The two other changes that we had in Canada regarding
Changing denominations were also interesting .
In 1987 the introduction of the Loon Circulation $ Dollar
Coin was met with a fair amount of resistance and skepticism.
This was mainly because the Government of Canada let the
coins circulate side by side with the $1.00 note until 1989 when
the BOC stopped producing the note .
1996 introduction of the $2.00 coin was far smoother. The
$2.00 note was immediately eliminated and only the coins
circulated .
To be really honest , personally I find the use of the coins far
handier .

This could get very "interesting" for the Federal Reserve and its member banks. With no alloy recovery program and if business start to round to the nearest nickel, the cents are going to start to really pile up. I hope they have a lot of warehouse space!

What a fascinating thread. In Britain we got rid of one pound notes over 40 years ago. I'm surprised that the dollar bill lasts longer than some of the higher denominations. It must cost more to strike the one cent coin than it's worth. Also I wonder about the future for any "real" coinage with the now universal use of cards...

Also very surprised at the absence of any alloy recovery programme!

Please turn this conversation back to coins - This topic is getting dangerously close to becoming a political discussion. I hate to have to lock it up.

Wonder how much--if any--2025 cent production has been completed--5%, 30%, all? With that, wonder if any cents which may have been produced to date will be 'recycled', along with materials already held by the mints but not yet prepared for striking. Wonder if 2025 uncirculated set production will be delayed or put aside/redone so any accommodation of the cent is removed.

And of course, wonder if any 2025 'early strikes' will somehow make their way out of the mints and appear in the marketplace.

Or, will 2025 production be allowed to run its course and then become the last year of issuance.

I am for the elimination of the cent as well as the elimination of the dollar bill. I would only want the cent to be produced for proof sets but could accept the loss there too.

Let's go to the law...

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/31/5112

Note that "shall" means must and may is optional, subject to other provisions & such

Quote:
(a)The Secretary of the Treasury may mint and issue only the following coins:

Quote:
(6)except as provided under subsection (c) of this section, a one-cent coin that is 0.75 inch in diameter and weighs 3.11 grams.

Quote:
(c)The Secretary may prescribe the weight and the composition of copper and zinc in the alloy of the one-cent coin that the Secretary decides are appropriate when the Secretary decides that a different weight and alloy of copper and zinc are necessary to ensure an adequate supply of one-cent coins to meet the needs of the United States.

That's it.

More generally, the mint operates as a business, taking orders from and fulfilling said orders from it's customers - coin collectors and the Fed for circulation. The Fed site indicates currency (paper money) orders but doesn't seem to list coins.

Does anyone think this will spur an uptick in collecting?

When asking this, people try to compare it to the Ike dollars or Mercury dimes, but that's not really comparable because a new dollar or dime is still minted and you could have the potential to catch one of these in a roll at the bank. With no pennies being melted, the chance isn't there anymore.

It is way past time for the cent to go.

As long as I have them in my uncirculated and proof mint sets, I am happy.

If they decided to make those bronze, I would be happier.

If they stopped minting them completely—that is, no more uncirculated and proof cents—I would get over it.

Nothing lasts forever.
