Sure glad to share @nic. I think that this pick-up fits in the vein that LCS's take care of their good customers. I've been buying coins from one of my sources for more than a decade--maybe closer to two decades by now and often joke that I've put his kids through college with my purchases. A couple years back, he purchased a collection of early dated coins from a NY-based collector and offered me first refusal on them. I got to pick through and select what I wanted before he listed them in his catalog.
This Groschen was among those that I picked up. According to Levinson, the rarity level suggests somewhere between 21 and 50 coins extant for collectors. I do note that acsearch has listed ten of them (11 listings, but one is a duplicate) so most likely the number is toward the top end of that figure. Most all of them have one or more chips on the edge. My coin of course has that unfortunate fold/crease as well as a small edge chip. The market for these is somewhat thin so pricing is always a bit hard to pin down. I do note that in aVF condition, this coin is listed at $400 in the price supplement by Levinson. The condition lowers that somewhat so for my coin so $326 seemed to be a reasonable price. |

Pics from PCGS website below to help folks see the comparison. @mon, your pic is at the edge of being completely unusable, but it doesn't look like a high 3 to me. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I am can weigh in with a confirmation or gentle correction. Also, for $2, isn't this a buy regardless?

@slerk, there is a very good old thread by @ultrarant where they travelled the world and posted about the coin shops that they found in various locations. I'm not sure that there is overlap between the places in that thread and your travel plans, but it is probably worth a read. Here is the link:

If you happen to find some good spots, please add on to this other thread when you return. Thx. |

Yes that Katz auction coin in particular looks like a close match. I'm not 100% sure if the clusters of dots are purely decoration or also sometimes serve as vowels, but the script looks pretty much the same to me too and I see the name Shah Muhammad Ali written in the second pic.
With that said, we do have someone who is a true expert on the coins of India and pops in at CCF from time to time. Here is a link to their massive, 48 page thread on the Princely States. Representative coins from Awadh are on pages 2 and 3, but none look to be a better match than the Katz coin.

I'd like to offer an alternate, fourth option: we know that this general region of the coin is often struck up weakly due to the majority of the metal flowing into the die to make Abe's bust. Perhaps this blank was a little bit light on metal and just didn't strike up as much as the mint would have liked. |
