We had a new dealer at our recent Fresno show who specializes in ancient coins. I only have a few ancients but have been casually looking for a nice denarius with a Hadrian portrait. The dealer didn't have one of those, but he pulled out this coin and I decided to buy it. Despite the moderate wear the portrait is quite nice, better than I've seen on some of those denarii I've examined. The coin looks to be an exact match for this piece on the Numista web page:

I'd appreciate any comments and opinions. Also, I wonder if anyone knows what the percentage of silver in the billon alloy might be.

Certainly a nice portrait! I like the variety in Alexandrian provincial coinage, they're a fun area to study and collect.

RPC is a great site for Roman provincial coinage, Numista has a link to their page for this type: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/3/6131

West puts the silver content for Hadrian's Alexandrian tetradrachms at about 15.7%: http://numismatics.org/digitallibra...95/nnan92614

That's a nice coin for the collection! Those Alexandrian coins always a have interesting devices, are dated, and feel nice and meaty in hand, I've always liked them.

It is my understanding that, as a general rule for the Roman Imperial period, there was supposed to be just as much actual silver in an Egyptian tetradrachm as there was in an Imperial standard denarius. So, for a rule of thumb fineness, get yourself:
- the weight of a standard Hadrian denarius - about 3.8 grams
- the official fineness of a Hadrian denarius - about 85%
- the weight of an Egyptian tetradrachm of Hadrian - about 14 grams.

Doing the maths on those figures, this gives a fineness of around 23%.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Very nice tetra. These are low billion.
Not an easy find? My Hadrian is worse, this alloy does not age well.
Agree about the feel, these thick coins in good shape feel nicer than the denarius.
