First impression was MS-63 RB, but I'm wondering about IT in UNITED. Looks like possible damage. Hopefully a filled die or other as-struck feature. How does this area appear in-hand, with magnification?

I notice lumps on the obverse stars. Liberty's profile is very weak by the nose. Overall look seems off.
What is the weight? A high-grade double eagle should weigh very close to 33.4 grams.

Apparently 1868 is the most common date for counterfeit gold dollars. This one might be real gold. I'd check it using XRF which my local coin shop would do for free.

Good coin to pass on to a young collector. If you want a problem-free example with comparable detail it should only cost a buck or two.

This coin has significant luster loss in the fields which would suggest an AU-58 grade to me. However, the high points don't show any visible wear or the color change I'd expect if the coin circulated. The strike is very strong and there are many small (but no large) contact marks. NGC settled on a grade of MS-61.

BH1964, the obverse line is pretty straight. I'd suspect it represents a die scratch rather than a crack.

Thanks for your comments!

Certainly looks genuine, with enough wear to take it into VF range. Uniform surface color suggests cleaning to me, although there don't seem to be any serious scratches or other obvious signs of mishandling.

I agree the purchase agreement should include a certification step to ensure the buyer gets a legit coin. As noted, a genuine example is a very desirable coin, even at this level of wear.

Please let us know how it turns out, and good luck!

edit: just noticed the angled photos which show surfaces that suggest an ex-jewelry piece. Still a nice coin for your collection, if confirmed genuine and priced right.

I'd venture VF-30. Surfaces look good to me and eye appeal is likewise very nice.

Love this issue because of the awesome overdate. Someone posted another example a few months back that had damage or strike defect which partially obscured the overdate feature. Adam126402's coin really shows what the date should look like. Congrats on a fine addition to your raw collection!

I'd like to trust major TPGs unconditionally but based on years of experience that just isn't the case. I could accept that this coin is uncirculated although I'd have to look for complete, uninterrupted luster across fields and devices before I'd be really confident.

It's my understanding that strike quality doesn't officially affect grade until your reach gem levels, i.e. MS-65 and above. I don't care how attractive the toning is, for a coin with this much strike deficiency the maximum possible grade should be MS-65. The grader can throw a star or plus on the slab if they really like the eye appeal.

Maybe I'm just behind the times.....

Here's a decent no-motto half eagle with original surfaces and no significant hits. What do you think about her?

Thanks in advance to all CCF Graders!

OK, this time I couldn't pass up the deal.

Spot price of gold yesterday was about $2720. The Costco price was $2699.99. With the executive Costco membership I supposedly get 2% cash back on all purchases. I paid with a credit cart that supposedly gives me 4% cash rewards on all purchases. Assuming I'm not misunderstanding the discount terms, my net cost of this 1-ounce bar should be:

$2699.99 - $54 - $108 = $2537.99.

I'll have to wait almost a year to get my Coscto rebate and I'll have to pay off the credit card in full next month, but maybe I did OK. It's a nice-looking bar, anyway.

I bought an example of this date specifically because the over date is so strong and obvious. The OP's coin is a very substandard piece, even before you consider cleaning and damage. Absolutely, send it back.

The NGC grade is XF-45. The strong remaining luster would suggest a higher grade of 53 or even 55 IMO. However, Liberty's portrait has a slight glossy appearance which doesn't look quite original. There are no obvious hairlines scratches, but perhaps the obverse was buffed with a jeweler's cloth at some point. The 45 grade probably represents some net-grading by NGC.
Thanks for the comments!

At just a few hundred dollars over bullion value, I thought this coin might be a good choice. What are your opinions and comments? It's in a problem-free NGC slab.
Thanks!

The closed 3 1873 is scarce and valuable in mint state, while the open 3 variety is about the most common Type 2 double eagle. If this were the closed 3 variety perhaps certification would make sense.

Assuming the first obverse photo is at all accurate, this coin has severe marks. The two crossed scratches in front of the face look like graffiti. Based on my experience sending gold coins to PCGS I can't see them giving this coin a pass.

I'm seeing MS detail, damaged, scratches, and/or graffiti.

Busy surfaces with lots of small marks and enough parallel obverse hairlines to indicate cleaning. Certified AU examples have sold recently for close to what you paid. Seems like you can do better for about the same cost.

Another vote for MS-64.
Like most late-date Walkers, the 1945-D is very common in mint state. Coin Facts estimates there are 50,000 examples grading MS65 or higher.

Lively discussion!
The pre-treatment coin has obvious light surface corrosion (euphemistically called environmental damage). No way it would have straight-graded. Like most posters, I think it looks better after treatment. Surfaces will also likely be protected from ongoing corrosion. Still a problem coin, but better eye appeal IMO.

It's the luster quality that stands out as a problem. If you compare this Morgan to a certified coin in, say, NGC or PCGS MS-63 grade, the luster differences should be apparent. Try a side-by-side comparison with a reference Morgan next time you are tempted. You should be able to determine whether the potential purchase has a defect.
