Hello, Recently picked up this 1989 ASE. Looks like a possible strike through on the reverse to the left and above the stars. Also something to the left of the T on the obverse. Still new to collecting so thoughts and knowledge are appreciated.   |

I see a possible Struck Through error, on the obverse. Reverse looks normal.

Can we see the full coin (both sides please). the shadows of these things on this coin does not seem to be in line with the shadows of other devices - Could be water spots?  cannot tell with out a full coin image. |

Reverse looks to me like Reed Marks....Obverse yes on a struck through debris |

I was hoping for a full coin image here. Hey Greasy Fingers - haven't seen you post in a while - welcome back (if you were gone, that is) and I think you are correct on the reverse - Reed Marks. |

Can someone explain how a coin gets Reed Marks and ID the damage/error next to the T on the obverse |

Several posters have identified the damage near the "T" as likely being due to a Strike-through error. This happens when a foreign object comes between the die and planchet during the striking process and causes a divot to be made in the planchet. There are many types of objects/material that can get caught in the chamber during the striking process and cause such errors, including broken pieces of the coin press, broken pieces of a die, hardened metal dust/grease combinations, etc.

It's worth noting that you have the bullion version of the 1989 ASE. While very nice, bullion coins are not treated with the same level of care typically associated with the collector versions (proof and uncirculated), so issues as yours exhibits are not uncommon. There's no such thing as a bad ASE in my book (unless it's counterfeit)! Nice photos! Edited by CelticKnot

Nice Explanation COMMEMS, The 1989 Bullion American Silver Eagle Shown is Interesting, I Believe The Obverse has a Struck Through ?, Is It Incused, ?. Is it Raised? I also Believe the Reverse was Clashed with ? The Suggestion that " Reeds " of Another ASE?, Could do What We see, Could it do that, Yes. I Have Personally Seen " Reed " marks on Many a Coin . However THESE marks on The Reverse are Far Too Out of Placement , to Match-up with Another ASE , Maybe Another Series of a Coin, But These marks Show More than The Possible Transfer of The " Reed Marks ". In My Opinion, With the Original Poster's Photos I See Another Clash or Transfer of ? East of The Clash Mark Not Lining Up to be Just Reed Marks .  PS, The " First " posted photo, of The Reverse, Do I see Glare from The Camera OR Clashed Letters Above the Reverse First Two Stars, Below the Letters " ATES..... If I ever feel like I've rounded out my "standard" ASE collection, I might add pieces from the Carr Mint and some other after-market varieties, but I don't see myself ever trying to collect a date series of Chinese fakes. Well... maybe.

Under lower magnification it looked like a scratch or a smudge but I think it could be lettering.

To the eye it looked raised but studying it under x10 it looks incused.
