Seems like a relatively unloved gold commemorative... Saw it today for around spot...

Why so little love for this one?

Thanks!

@commems will certainly know more, but this looks like the proof version rather than the business strike. Either way it's a nice pick-up!

@spence. I haven't bought it yet. But I'm considering it. I also posted a 1986 AGE under the bullion forum thread to confirm authentic but there isn't usually as much engagement in that thread section.

Yes I saw that. My personal opinion is that I don't like to buy gold or silver bullion without it either being slabbed or else unless I can test it with my Sigma Metalytics (or both ideally).

Many of the earlier modern commemorative US gold Half Eagles, especially the higher mintage proof coins (like the one shown), can be purchased for just over bullion. The coin's subject - the Bill of RIghts - is not realy relevant.

The coin shown would be classified as an impaired proof due to its many surface marks and wouldn't typically sell for more than bullion. Many collectors prefer these modern US commemorative coins pristine and in their Original Government Packaging (OGP); lesser-quality coins without the OGP have a much smaller market.

Buy it if you like it, but I don't see it as a solid investment (read - just a bullion coin).

Agree this is an impaired proof and has zero numismatic value - its value is 100% tied to the price of gold.

Many of these 90% gold commems have been tossed in the bullion bin.

I think it's an underappreciated set but don't quote me... There are grade and mintage rarities like 1996 Smithsonian uncirculated coin with a mintage of 9000 pieces with only 95 making MS70 at PCGS
or the 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball uncirculated coin that only managed to sell 1,500 copies.

I'm a little over 1/2 way done with my MS registry set in PCGS 70 and it's a surprisingly difficult set to put together.

I have been adding the $5 commemoratives to my collection. Mostly slabbed MS 69 or ms70 with a few raw coins in the original capsule. So far I have 28 different but the price of gold has been holding me back on progression recently. Oddly enough the The Bill of rights coin by the original poster is one I am missing.

It may be underappreciated, but there aren't a lot of collectors searching for these, so the prices mostly track bullion and with gold prices high, there won't be a lot of people entering the market.

Buy it if you like it, either as bullion or for the subject matter. Just be an aware buyer.

Either Way, I would say, Your investment is Solid. Beautiful Coin,

The Traveling Marks seen would take away from a " Collectors " point of view, Just around Spot, Nice.....Investment or Hole Filling Too...?

PS, I see Discussion about OGP, I am one of These Collectors, Classics , Modern, Silver and Gold, We Love The Pristine Coinage the Mints' Produce, along with The Original Government Packaging.........

I did not buy the coin but this discussion certainly helps me in thinking out loud about these type coins.

If I'm completely honest, I don't care for mint packaging and mostly avoid anything in boxes. Much of this is about space and handling; a capsule on the nightstand or table top is easy to handle and enjoy; mint boxes , for me at least, end up in a drawer. I understand the attraction though.

Oh c'mon. Most historians consider it a standoff after both sides threw in the towel at Ghent for different reasons.
