Australia Post are releasing 20 new AFL-themed coins on Monday 15 May. As a collector of circulating decimals I will have to bite the bullet and fork out whatever the price will be (probably twice face value or thereabouts). To me, such coins are really 'junk' coins but for the sake of a complete collection I will get a set.

If Australia Post continue with these types of themes (think NRL, basketball, soccer etc) I will either go broke or give up collecting.

My preference is for coins in mint condition - maybe I will have to revert to circulated coins from now on?

The only 'collector' decimal coins that I collect are those that can be found in circulation.
Face value is the maximum price I am prepared to pay.
Convenience to collect in this way, and interesting designs are small bonuses.

So I don't mind if they are really numismatic 'junk'.
I can re circulate them, if I need to, but that need has not happened yet.

My collection comprises about 250 different types of all denominations.

For those that may be interested, on May 15 Australia Post will be releasing AFL $1 coins comprised of a coin representing each club, plus the chance to find two special coloured coins. https://auspost.com.au/afl-coins?ci...K20230505001

All these Australia Post and Woolworths coins have turned Australian decimal coins into one huge joke. And I'm not laughing.

As I understand it only the AFL and the AFLW will be given out in change (=actual circulation) while the other 18 coins will be sold in tubes and the folder only. But not given out as change, although noodlers will likely find some of them in circulation eventually.
Anyway, this means as a collector of Aussie decimal circulation coinage I only need two.

If it really is only two 'junk' coins then not so bad. Where did that info come from? The info I saw suggested it would be like the junk alphabet coins.
However, I don't like the move to 'commemorating' everything and anything just to make more coins (tokens) to sell to collectors.
Up until the last few years commemorative circulating $1 coins have been reasonably special. Now with (insignificant) alphabet coins and dinosaur coins, it's becoming a joke. How long before we see retailers like Kmart and Bunnings etc getting in on the act and releasing their versions (with the RAM) of Australia Post's 'junk' coins? Why should Australia Post have a monopoly on them?
I guess with the transition to digital transactions, RAM and Australia Post will have to produce more junk coins to raise revenue?
I enjoy the hunt for circulating coins but have to draw the line at the junk coins.

@sally and @coaster, I have merged your two threads as they cover the same subject, although perhaps with slightly different vantage points.

I see that even though the sets aren't supposed to be released until Monday 15th, they are already selling on ebay for around $70 (for a $45 set). That's nuts!

Why do people rush out and buy these sets at nearly twice the price when they will be readily available in another 5 days time? Doesn't make sense to me.

Cause they run out and then you can filp them, plus some of them arent even really coin dealer they just think its a get rich quick idea. Sad thing is the true collector or even the new collector will miss out.

SallyG

a few years back, just before the Australian numismatics' market was about to be flooded with an extraordinary number of $2 coins - the RAM was issuing many new $1 coins at the time - I wrote tongue in cheek that the next series of $1 coins will be 1 ) water has been discovered to be wet, 2 ) the sun rises in the east, and 3) a sock has a hole in it so that you can get your foot into it. Great revelations for us all. aren't they?

The RAM has lost the plot in its own self serving quest to be relevant and profitable.

Still, with some 650.000 + AFL members Australia wide the RAM has tapped into a huge market with this AFL $1 series which should be very popular - that is, of course, providing the RAM somehow manages to realises it has to mint more each of these AFL $1 coins for the 18 clubs then what they claim they minted for the yet to be seen 1992 $1 Mob of Roos.

Oh great. Now I'm tossing up whether to buy the set for that 2.25% premium or just let it go. Noodling coins, especially $1 are going to get much harder from next month ...

Sorry, but I can't help myself

The premium in % is actually: 225

The premium is 2,25 times face value

I'll answer my own question as the RAM sent an email stating that the mintage is UNLIMITED, also buy each club coin separately for $5 if desired.
