It has nice luster but has some wear on the shield, scratches on the portrait and nicks on the rim (above portrait is most obvious).

Maybe it'll be AU-58.

I'm still a learner though, lets wait what the experts say

In grading high condition examples of the Blakemore design,
look for sharp face details on the animals and on the emu's feathers.
This coin complies, so no wear, but some of the rim denticles both sides are a bit weak, as are some of the shield details and star, and 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA'.

The ARE some tiny nicks and scratches in the fields, both sides, so this coin is not gem,
but not too far from that.

Has to be ChUnc. (I don't use Sheldon on Australian coins.)

Patination has not progressed enough to hide the mint lustre much.

I can understand your elation in finding this coin in a bulk lot purchase !

I'd say Uncirculated. Strike weakness and the scratches prevent a choice grade in my opinion.

Thanks for your opinions. This coin will be winging its way to PCGS in the next few weeks and no doubt
should grade MS64 or better IMO.If it wasn't for the fine scratches it would grade
MS65 but for me is a once in a lifetime find although I did find 2 more of them
in similar quality in the same lot

The coin appears to have some very minor wear on the reverse and the obverse ( this could also be seen as a strike issue) with obvious scratches on the obverse in the fields and across the Kings face.
However this could grade as high as MS63, Either way a fantastic find in a Bulk lot

Nice pickup!! How do coins like this find their way into a bulk lot these days? To answer my own question, probably a deceased estate where the family didn't know any better or care!! Pity about those fine scratches across the obverse, even so and with a split adjectival grade, the coin would surely be aU/UNC and easily MS63 on the Sheldon scale from what I've seen?

Super coin Steve.
I agree with your assessment.
Would have been 65ish without the scuff.
Probably 64.

The light obverse scratches don't show up on the PCGS photo; that means that they can't be too bad.
It is possible the coin was scratched when it was part of the bulk lot. Whatever the case, that is the way it is.

Apparently, PCGS saw the legend 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA' as a striking weakness, perhaps a partly Grease Filled Die.

Fortunately, there is still lots room between MS64 and MS69,
so I would agree with MS64.

My name is Bill, and I have a similar story. After 20+ years of not even thinking about the coins my grandfather had left me,I found a 1915 threepence! It's deffinitely dirty but looking at it close,it's in the same shape examining the back shield I think mine has more. I'm just curious if This really is a good find. Hanks!
