Thanks everyone for the comments. Its a bit of a mystery. The lines must have been added after hubbing which is strange. I'd agree with Airgem, and the lines may not be from a lathe. Now I see that some lines are not parallel so I guess that means they are not from a lathe.

And the lathing is heavier on the areas that have the most doubling. I'd be interested in what everyone thinks is going on. Is lathing associated with doubled dies ? Is this a failed attempt to erase the doubling ? TIA.
