Back again after a while with some images of coins of the Princely states of India.
One of the most challenging areas of Indian numismatics is identification of the Princely state coins. Most often collectors get so disappointed with them that these coins remain unidentified for several years. I am trying to give images of some of those coins. But I too have apprehensions about some wrong attributions that might have crept in in spite of my best efforts to avoid. Anybody who knows about such coins are the most welcome to correct me when I go wrong.

Alwar is now part of the state of Rajastan in Northern India. This coins is an issue of Mangal Singh Bahadur (1874-1892.AD)

I have a rupee of Alwar state, just like this one, and in about the same condition.

ARCOT
State of Arcot was an area around the town Arcot located near Chennai in the present day Tamil Nadu. This princely state came into existence since 1692 AD. The rulers were known as Nawabs who ruled as Viceroys of the Mughal emperors. Arcot was made part of the British settlements in India in 1855.AD.

Cash is the denomination. Usually coins of Arcot and Polygars are grouped together. But in fact they are different.

Here is a better condition coin of the same type.
Tamil letter "na" is said to signify "Nawab". This must be true because lot of the Nawabs have used their initials as micronyms on several of their coins.

@drnsreedhar, with regard to the Nawabi coins, do you know what the rev design element is? To my uneducated eyes, it looks like a beetle surrounded by dots. Thanks for the education!

@spence:) It is very interesting to note that there are numerous figures that occupy the reverse of Arcot cash. Similar is the case with the then prevailing Polygar coins as well. There are animals, deities and lots of difficult to identify objects depicted on them. This also is one among them. It could be a beetle or turtle or even a crudely executed spider.(Because spiders are there in some coins of other rulers of the area). It is fascinating to imagine what was intended by whoever struck it!! Thanks.

British India is one of my main coinage areas and as such I have plenty of the milled emperor/ empress coins. In fact I only need the dewas J.B 1/12 Anna, granted they're not all high grades but they're expensive otherwise.
