Canadian Cheques And Fiscal Documents

I was just handed a new cheque 10 minutes ago to research for a guy. It is like nothing I ever seen before. I am having my aunt scan it at work when she returns Tuesday. It is from the Bank of New Brunswick, written up in Pound Sterlings and is made out to a women in London. Early traveler's cheque I am guessing.

Not postage, but excise tax stamps that were issued on fiscal documents of that era. Postage stamps were often used though (the NL may be postage, I'm not sure). I believe the rate for these was 2 cents per $50 or fraction thereof, although that would mean the Red Rose one would have needed another.

I called my aunt to remind her to scan the cheque at work tomorrow but she isn't going in. She will do it Wednesday, ugh.

The little piece of paper with it called it a "blue note". It is in rough shape. Stained from old tape and new tape on it. I am not sure if it is archival or regular Scotts. It has a few rips and I am not sure how hard these are to find. Once I get some more info I will decide if I want to buy it off my dealer. It has a schooner and the number 2 on the left hand side. Once I am home on a computer with proper speed I will check my mails and do some more digging.

The coin club meets this upcoming Thursday so I need to do some serious digging.

I may go down to the office supply store or library Wednesday and scan some of my New Brunswick Railroad stocks.

That is a second of exchange. Multiples of a draft/order would be sent (usually in three) via differing modes of transportation and the first to arrive would be the one cashed. I'm not seeing any markings indicating this was the one turned in. These generally have more value than normal cheques, etc. and a complete set is very desirable. This one is rough, but does have the Bank of New Brunswick going for it locally.

Ok, I think I understand. 3 exact bills of exchange was sent to London. They did this because 2 could possibly get lost traveling so far. A complete set of 3 would be, well, complete.

It is not scratched up or poked with "PAID" so this one would have been one of the two that came in last.

I want to see that bank, The Maritime Bank and the Red Rose Tea factory when I get down to Saint John at the end of May. That is a great picture.

So Chequere, could you put a price on this? How common are they? Will I find one at the Saint John Coin Club show? I could tell you what he is asking if you want but I don't want to influence your decisions.

I bought a few more cheques off of ebay last night I will post in this thread too. They are both neat in their own way.

So this is a cheque from The Bank of Montreal, well, kind of.

In 1922 (late December '21) The Merchant Bank of Canada was bought out by the Bank of Montreal. This company, A.M. Bell Co, Limited, kept their old cheques and stamped over them.

I like the revenue stamp, just not where it is stuck.

$20 was the ballpark I was thinking as my max. The Bell pieces are relatively common (I know I have some somewhere), but still nice with the building vignette. That's a promissory note. Yes, the stamp on the building is seen often. I'll have to find mine sometime.
