Interesting Find From Circulation

Hi! I've had a lucky past few weeks. 1 1930 Wheatie in VF, 1 1946 Wheatie in EF, 1 1956 -D Wheatie in EF, 1 1935 Mercury dime in F-12 and 1 Roosevelt 1953-D in VF. I don't know what's going on but these were random finds, stuff I did not notice, (except the Merc) until I was putting them in the change bucket at home! It's got me looking again! Digging around in a closet at home I found 4 partially filled Lincoln whitman coin books,(thought they were empty!) nothing rare, but some very clean mid 30's to late 50's stuff. Most are suffering from book "goo" unfortantely. They were part of a bulk "junk" deal that I bought a few years back! There are a handful of Indian Head's as well. I love post's like these when they come up from time to time. Maybe I will make it a sticky so we can keep it rolling! Mike

Oh boy do I remember that thread! I was a regular bragger *cough* contributor! Unfortunately my finds have dropped off considerably lately. We don't roll our own coin anymore, we order it from the FRB, so that cuts down on the time I get to spend searching the loose coin. Also, I don't do the bagging for shipment anymore due to a shoulder injury, doctor doesn't want me lugging around those heavy bags! But, I did find a few good things this week- a handful of wheat cents and a silver nickel. The dates escape me, I accidently left them in my cash drawer at work Friday! [:0]

shatsi, look under the section on coin grading practice. There are great pictures of a 1909 Lincoln Cent with the "wheat stalk" reverse. This reverse design was used from 1909 through 1958. In 1959 the reverse was changed to the current Memorial design in honor of the 150th. anniversary of Lincolns birth. Plans are underway for changes in 2009 to honor the 200th anniversary of his birth. Mike

Today at work I found a 1943-P War Nickel in VF to XF. The best one I've found yet. Most are usually well worn.

I find a lot of old Jefferson nickels in circulation. Because the Jefferson nickel hasn't changed much in appearance since its inception in 1938 (with exception of WWII nicks), most of the older nickels readily blend in with the others.

I believe its still possible to collect a nearly complete set of Jeffs from pocket change. For this reason, if any start-up collector seeks advice on what to collect, this is one area I steer them toward.
