I know that a grader must complete an accurate grade in less than a minute! It truly is a high pressure job. Years ago a dealer friend of mine gave it try at NGC. 7 months later he was back to work with his son selling Coins and currency! He said it was a young man's job. He is the fastest person I ever met who could handle a coin and grade it spot on. Good luck in your venture.
[ Hi my old friends. I have not posted for about six years! Where does the time go. About 15 months ago I started rebuilding my coin collection. I sold all but a few special coins. I hung on to my xf40 pcgs fugio cent, my1818 pcgs ms63 r&b large cent,a handfull of capped bust halves and some gold. I have been able to aqiure a nice start on a new collection. I ended up having 27 operations! I am 10 years cancer free just like Mom(Susan). I hope to get back into the swing of things. I love and missed you all and the site is so improved since I left. I do talk to Susan at least once a week. You. folks have made this site awesome! Peace, Uncle mike
Wow great story and quite strange indeed. I love old coppers, my favorite coins over all others. I bought my first large cent when I was about 12 or 13 years old. It was,in retrospect a very corroded example that was probably dug up. I do not remember the year but I do remember I paid about 4 dollars for it and my friends thought I was nuts! At any rate this was a great coo for this collector, and just goes to show that learning varieties and close study of every coin you buy can really pay off. Mike
How about giving the general public a cheap thrill and releasing them in circulation? I have done that many times. Most of the times restored date Buff's do not look to hot, grainy at best. Mike
I love Franklin's and have a complete B.U. set, MS64+. I also have all the proofs. My non proofs are all in a Dansco but all my proofs are in PCGS, NGC and ANAC tombs. I only have one Cameo proof. As I always say, Franklin's will be worth good money in the future. Look at some of the mintage's vs prices. Still highly affordable and a fun set to complete. I still search for upgrades and never have any problem selling my duplicates. Mike
What's all this talk about fearing the new currency? Our government would never issue currency that was not fully backed by Gold and silver in reserve!Mike........p.s. This thread is a blast!!
Certainly no nerd here. I was also more of the biker type most of my life. After reading this I'm wondering if there is a connection to bikers and coins! My only problem now is I wish I would not lived as hard as I did the first 45 years or so. I'm paying for it big time now.(I don't think I would change a thing though as I had a blast living it) At least now, all crippled up, I still collect and enjoy my coinsMike
Most dealers I know can't afford to spend the time or pay someone to search bags of Wheaties. Two to three cents seems to about what they are selling them for depending on quantity. Most dealers don't even want to mess with them and generally have a few buyers who purchase whatever people bring in. Mike
Great thread and it certainly illustrates what has been said over and over again. Learning what to look for by doing the homework reading and learning first can go a long way to stretching your collecting dollar. Great to see the involvement within the family. This is a great hobby to share with your loved ones. I have great memories of my Father, Uncle and Grandfather helping me along when I started collecting. Mike
Great story! Sit on it for long enough and will seem like a good price a bit down the down the road. Nice looking coin. I don't think you were hurt to badly! Mike
I just found a 1959 Silver Dime a few weeks back. I find 3 or 4 silver coins per year(last year I had a run of 4 Quarters in a row including a solid 1938 EF40) and I don't actually "search" my change. It is almost always the different sound that alerts me to a silver coin. I think there are very few actually floating around but they are still out there to be found. What I find interesting is how few people realize how much they are worth over face value these days. Mike
I've been looking at Currency from a collectors point of view for many years and do not recall running across anything quite like this or the others he has listed. Way cool but way out of my "league" boo.... rim shot..... etc...etc......Mike
Fred, great to hear that the Scout Coin has been authorized! It's also nice to see you posting albeit only for a short time as you explained. I have been a bit of a ghost around here myself for many reasons, mostly health related. How about dropping me a PM or perhaps I can call you and we chat for a bit. Let me know. I want to see how your treatments are going. Peace my friend. Mike
Gas in N.W Indiana is going at about $3.89 for Reg 87 octane to $4.19 for 91 octane. In Chicago it's well over $4.00 for regular. Diesel in running about $4.50 a gallon in the area. This is really becoming a burden for a lot of people. I hope things improve soon. We now live about 20 miles away from where my wife works. We just moved here about 2 years ago. Prior to this move we were driving 50 miles each way to work! Glad we moved!Mike
