I hope I am posting this in the correct topic. I purchased 3 large cents from a seller on ebay, that I have purchased from before. When I got the small package out of the mailbox, it was obvious that it was empty. I noticed a slit in the back of the package, the pictures show what it looked like. I notified the seller. I took the package to my local post office. The teller agreed it looked intentional, but since tracking showed 4 different locations before it arrived at my house, they were unable to state where it happened. It did not happen after being delivered, as my mailbox is watched and no one accessed it but me. I am very disappointed as these cents filled empty spaces in my album and I thought I got them for a nice price. I again notified the seller and he refunded me my funds. He said he never had anything like that happen before and neither have I. I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else...

Yes - if the coins are allowed to shift in the package they can easily cut through. But the opening in your package looks like it is much large than just a coin or two. Looks like it was slit open with a knife.

That sucks! I have never had that happen, where someone obviously cut it open and took them. I have had coin packages mysteriously lost. One came back to me many months later, coin still there.
Glad you got a refund!

Crime within the USPS is way up. Coins, birthday cards, etc. Were these slabbed?

Not slabbed. They were probably in 3 separate 2x2 mylar holders as that is how he sent the previous large cents I ordered. He puts them inside the paper receipt, so I assume if you feel closely, you could have felt the coins inside (I guess). Total value of coins was $30. I am more of a stamp guy, but recently have been on a coin binge and am flabbergasted that this happened. Makes me leery about buying more coins on ebay at this time...

chiapas, that is a truly unfortunate and exceedingly rare occurrence. I've been buying coins on ebay for ~ 30 years, and have never had such a thing happen to me. The only time I had a problem was about 10 years ago when I bought 4 rolls of silver War Nickels, and the chucklehead seller put them in an envelope unsecured. Yes, it busted in transit. There were a few still in the envelope when it was delivered, but seller gave me a full refund. Don't give up because of one bad experience.

I agree with the comments of Honda Bogus - I have bought many coins through ebay and had very very few problems with the postal service. I had one time when the coin was not secure and it cut its way out of the package. I returned a coin to New Zealand (from the USA) and the seller said it never arrived. I sent a coin to Canada once and it went to the wrong apartment in a complex but the person was nice enough to bring it to the proper apartment. Nothing is perfect but all in all the postal service has been great for me.

Late 90's I bought a box (twenty rolls) of early teen wheaties that was shipped via UPS. I tracked the box to my town and then realized it was headed back to the seller. I notified the seller about what was going on and when it arrived back at it's original address it was indeed empty. Someone in house had marked it refused and removed the contents. Was a frustrating experience and I can empathize with your situation.

I've never had this happen to me, but I've heard of it happening to others. Unfortunately postal theft has always been a reality, though from my experience I would say it's very rare. Of course when it happens to you, it suddenly becomes far too real.
