Reducing a common cent is more likely a pricing system, as the amount will be rounded to the nearest even number. Nickel might be the next in line to get fired

Quote:Nickel might be the next in line to get fired Indeed. It needs to be changed or halted as well, because their cost exceeds their value. A circulating nickel can be saved by a material change, but it would be easier to just say buh-bye!

Of course, the higher you go with coin elimination, the closer you get to legal trouble. Rounding to the nearest nickel already has no legal backing, so merchants won't want the responsibility of rounding to the nearest 10 or 25 cents that would be needed without circulating nickels. Various states require merchants to collect sales tax to the nearest cent, and for some reason states get upset if you threaten their tax income, go figure. Knowingly violating sales tax law invites expensive legal action. So, merchants need a law that makes rounding legal so that they do not annoy customers, slow commerce and get sued. Maybe such a law will happen, eventually.

I just noticed: ebay is selling year 2025 Lincoln cents/coins with a "Presale" status.

I am sure the States' legislatures, treasuries, and courts would be fully aware of the difficulties accounting for taxes on cash sales to the nearest cent. I imagine business accountants will be earning their keep as this unfolds.

Interesting. 2024 rolls, not 2025, but I am sure hype will win here.

They are bidding on item that doesn't exist; ghost ."Presale" status. Not a good idea.

Even if they stop minting the cent...pennies won't disappear, heck I've got 16 unopened bank boxes and a few 50$ sacks laying around the house and not to mention a few more loose change jars. I wouldn't say I'm hoarding pennies or copper mining, just changed direction from roll searching to more so collecting/completing series. Plus when I do leave the house I have loose change with me for purchases. I'm sure I'm not the only member here with a few cents laying around.

They'll still be around for decades, trillions were produced. No need for panic. There are more than enough to satisfy collector demand.
