Hello- I am posting today to share my best cherrypick. the coin was recently submitted to PCGS for verification and certification. they have slabbed the coin as genuine - ag details and attributed it as the previously unverified LM-5 die marriage. because of this piece a new variety has been added to the varieties of known 1800 Half Dimes and given the PCGS reference number 906788. attached you will find the PCGS trueview. This coin is a marriage of two previously known dies that had never been reported together. the obverse is the 1800 Libekty. the reverse is the die found on all 1801 and 1802 Half Dimes as well as some 1803s. I purchased this coin from ebay in the spring of 2004. I was collecting Half Dimes by die marriage at the time. this coin had enough detail that I could identify the reverse die pretty easily. that, combined with the remnants of the top of the last date digit had me convinced I had found an 1802 Half Dime (a very rare date with ~35 known). when I got the coin in hand it was clear that the obverse wasnt an 1802. that was when the fun really started. in 2005 I presented it at the ANA worlds fair of money. that display won awards for best in class (science) as well as the national coin week award. at that show I was able to show the piece to Ed Price, who at the time had 2 complete die variety sets of bust Half Dimes. In 2016 I wrote an article for the JRCS describing the coin. at the charlotte EAC I had the chance to show the coin to David Perkins and Jim Matthews (among others). This year, at ANA summer seminar, I showed the coin to fellow instructor and friend Kyle Knapp. Kyle, who works for PCGS, got excited about my fun coin. I sent it home with him so that PCGS could verify and catalog the coin. so anyway... I present to you my rarest coin - the 1800 LM-5 Draped Bust Half Dime:  |

Given the coin's condition, most collectors wouldn't even consider such a coin. Its only due to your advanced knowledge of the series that you have come across a once in a lifetime cherrypick. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

thanks everyone!
its fun to have it certified. most of my coins are raw. I like to hold them and trust my grading and authentication abilities. for this one I think the third party grader verification really broadens the appeal. itll be interesting to see if any more show up over the next year or two. would be cool if someone found an xf or something.

fun story here - i lost this coin for about 10 years. after the ANA show (it was the national money show in kansas city, not the worlds fair of money which was held in san francisco that year) I gave the coin to my father for safe keeping. I was a college student and my living conditions werent very stable. he tucked it into my Logan Mccloskey book and placing it somewhere in his office. dad was a bit of a hoarder so the book was promptly buried. i sold my Half Dime die variety set about a year later. I needed money to pay for a study abroad program. I mostly forgot about my coin. fast forward a decade. dad was reorganizing his office and found my book. He returned it to me. I was thumbing through the pages and enjoying the nostalgia when an envelope fell out of the book. it was a bit like discovering the coin all over again. if the coin hadnt been misplaced there is a pretty decent chance I would have sold it with the rest of the set. its good to be lucky. |
