So I've recently noticed 2019 minted $1 coins that have two different queens effigies? Can anybody clarify why this might be?

The Queen is getting old. This new effigy was released last year in Australia to provide a more up-to-date look of the Queen. Of course, this was done much earlier at home in the UK, with British coinage carrying this new effigy since 2015. Note that due to copyright reasons (as I understand it), coinage bearing the new effigy outside of the UK need to have the Queen's sholders included. Hope this helps  |

'On 2 March 2015 The Royal Mint revealed a new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which went into production in the United Kingdom that very day. The new portrait was designed by Jody Clark, the first Royal Mint engraver to be chosen to create a definitive royal coinage portrait in over 100 years.
At that time, the Royal Australian Mint decided to continue with the Fourth Portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. This Effigy could be worth money in the years ahead,your Oz. ones not so much.LOL

There are no mint sets or whatever where you can get a guaranteed uncirculated example of the old portrait 2019 coins (as far as I can tell). |

As I understand it, the effigy in Australia was changed about halfway through 2019.
What coins are are rare and what are common, depends entirely on the number minted of each effigy / denomination combination. Mint won't release mintage numbers until mid second half of year 2020.

I got myself some though I haven't opened them yet. The ones I got in previous years were okay but the heavier coins (50c, $1 and $2) tend to get pretty bag-marked in the bags unfortunately.

Here are the "five ages of Queen Elizabeth II" as shown on the obverse of our 5 cent coins. Note the "old" and "new" versions of the 2019 coins I found it difficult to photograph this group of really shiny coins  Squire  Edited by Squire Wilson

The fifth Effigy as shown above is actually the sixth Effigy or 6th Portrait. although the Vladimir Gottwald 5th Effigy did not ever appear on a 5 cent coin due to it being a one off on the 2000 Royal Visit 50 cent. I know it is confusing but the effigies go like this. Gillick - 1st portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing a laurel Machin - 2nd portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara Makleouf - 3rd portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the King George IV State Diadem Rank-Broadley - 4th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara Gottwald - 5th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara. Clark - 6th portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing the King George IV State Diadem and the Victorian Coronation Necklace. Not sure if you guys have ever seen this coin it is a beauty with all 6 portraits as used on Australian coinage of Queen Elizabeth II. It is the reverse of a Tokelau $5  Mike |
