Like the Qantas $1 it seems the 2019 Year of Indigenous languages 50c piece is another coin that seems not to have made it into circulation (at least as far as I can tell in Qld). Odd for a mintage of 2 million. Has anyone found this beastie in loose change? If so, which state? Lots of them from mint rolls and bags on ebay.

None yet I think but I thought I saw what looked like one in a family member's change (here in south east Queensland) - I'll check later tonight.

Confirming that I did get one yesterday, and it looks very fresh - hardly circulated at all.

Today the bank's coin machine was short on the one dollar coins that I wanted so I thought that I'd make up the difference with 50c coins ... and this is what came down the chute! All were showing either the Indigenous languages or the 2019 IRB effigy on each or both ends. Just to be certain I opened up a roll and sure enough ... Quickest noodle I've ever done!

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the indigenous words on the reverse running bottom to top rather than left to right, as would be expected?

Not sure - I'm sure the design was explained in a press release when it came out - it might have some insights?

I think that I'm now able to answer my own question! I was watching a video on YouTube and apparently the reason that the languages are listed sideways is to depict that no one language is more important than another whereas if they were listed horizontally then you would have one language listed on top, down to one listed on the bottom.
