Someone dropped off this piece at our Fresno coin show over the weekend. It just appeared on the registration desk and so far I don't know who left it. It says ".999 Fine Silver" and ".999 Pure Silver" but shows no weight value. It actually weighs 20.1 grams (about 0.646 troy ounce). It's the same diameter as other silver 1-ounce rounds I have, but noticeably thinner (as it would be if it's real silver). Color is good, "ring" sound seems OK, it looks good through a piece of tissue, and it's non-magnetic. The rim has 5 sections of reeding alternating with 5 smooth sections. Has anyone seen these before? Would you believe it's actually silver? Thanks for your input!

APMEX sells these as .67 oz. rounds.

Could be, silver is 10.49 g/cm3. What's it's density?

It's silver all right. Just a strange .67 OZ.

Thanks for the info, looks like it's good silver, just in a bizarre quantity. If it's supposed to be 0.67 troy ounces my scale shows it to be a tad underweight. Might add up to a significant shortfall in silver if anyone decided to buy a big pile of these.

Kotsr, counterfeit bullion products are a real problem. When presented with an unknown-style silver round I don't assume it's necessarily genuine. It appears someone donated this piece to our coin club. We will likely offer it as a raffle prize at our monthly meeting but I first need to be confident it's not a fake. Due diligence, right?

The coin club may want to invest in or maybe a member has access to a Sigma analyzer

Yea, but XRF analyzers are at least $12,000 on ebay for a used one.... hard investment, I guess if everyone pools their money, then the coin club could share it.

What does that matter that fakes are made every second of everyday? Fakes are very simple to identify
