Looks genuine from here, this one is a short lived circulated piece as the time Japan was in the process invading China, people feel the design wasn't appropriate with the sun symbol that reminiscence the Japan flag and the bird that look like Japan air craft attacking the Chinese Junk. This was quickly pulled from circulation.
I would definitely get this one authenticated if it were mine, it is more of a family heirloom to hold down for generation.

Maybe or maybe not odd, but that rim from 3 o'clock to 6 on the reverse is something worth a closer look?

Looks authentic. Toning also gives a plus to the authenticity assessment. Send him for grade, I wonder what he will take.

Quote: Maybe or maybe not odd, but that rim from 3 o'clock to 6 on the reverse is something worth a closer look? A reasonable question, but that sort of raised rim or rim fissure or whatever is apparently a thing on these. Below, see two other Year 21s from a quick search through Stack's archives showing a similar effect. Aside from that, the piece screams genuine in terms of "fabric" and patina. Textbook long-term tape tone... which fortunately is not too horrendous here as it sometimes can be. Was anybody else shocked to find a genuine Year 21 when opening this thread?!!

Quote: Was anybody else shocked to find a genuine Year 21 when opening this thread?!! In collections we've purchased there have been 30-40 fakes of this and a grand total of 2 genuine examples we've ended up with. Certainly was not expecting to see a genuine example! Quote: Maybe or maybe not odd, but that rim from 3 o'clock to 6 on the reverse is something worth a closer look? I would be very confident of the authenticity of the piece based on the photos

Thank you everyone for a bit of history and opinion. Not sure if I will get this one slabbed. If I do, I'll post the results.

I think some TPG's offer an authenticity service and you have options to have it slabbed & graded or just verified if good or bad.

Mama moley; what a piece. Holy grail for world crown collectors. Lots of hopeful folks play the lottery, but very rarely does the lottery play YOU. Congrats on a super rare find.
