And...the final one - got a little emotional and carried away on this purchase, paid $120 (oh well). This will finish my first complete set.

What do you think? Now I get to work on my AU Liberty Head Nickel set.

The 1912-S is a key date. Lets see how good my memory is...238,000?
Lowest mintage in series.

Yup - but ironically the 1885 (1,473,300) and 1886 (3,326,000) cost more overall. Any ideas why?

I agree with Dave. I think it's a very similar comparison can be made with the 1877 indian with the 1909-s indian. Folks later started recognizing low mintage dates as collectible in the early 1900s, so many more were saved from circulation and therefore the lower mintage date actually has more surviving examples.

The 1885 and 1886 nickels were the fourth and fifth issues in the series. By then the novelty of the new coin had worn off and no one really paid attention to them. So the 1885 and 1886 nickels went into circulation, stayed there, and wore out. The 1912-S was from the last year of the series. As such they were more heavily hoarded and are more available today than the 85 or 86. Similar situation, but in reverse, with the SVDB and 14-D Lincoln's. The SVDB being new was heavily hoarded but the now "old hat" 14-D circulated so that today the low mintage SVDB is easily available while the 14-D with a much higher mintage is more difficult to locate.

Congratulations on getting the 1912-S. That's one of the few Liberty head nickels I still need.

Lowest mintage in series.

Which is why I have an entire roll of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel.

I wonder if your kidding on that one. Actually an UNC set wouldn't be that inpossible. Just rather expensive.
