I meant to say I would NOT get it graded unless is it as possibly a variety on demand .
I think that year may have some varieties (I.e. doubled die or repunched date. My focus is on a different series so I can't tell you for certain the 1889 Varieties would bring a premium even if the coin is a details grade.
There is plenty on the web that should help you figure out if you have one. Even if you don't, you will learn a lot doing the research. |

I hope to acquire one but am a ninny and will only get a certified one. My feeling for something like this is that is a trend. Depending on where the market it, a chopmark will either improve or decrease non-key date. |

, it does look cleaned and that will make valuing the the coin a little trickier. If it were my coin, I would not spend the money to have it graded. You MIGHT wind up ahead if it came back with at least XF details.
It all depends on what you are planning on doing with it - keeping it or selling.

I am not sure there is anything that you can do at this point since they were cracked out and many, MANY have tried to deal with this yahoo unsuccessfully. I think at some point we all have made an error in judgement but at least you got yours over early in your (hopefully long) coin collecting career.

Good eye, diorthotis! When I was looking at it before I bought it I thought it was RPD-003 as well since the pictures were not as clear. The 8's are close but not quite right for RPD-003 and correct for RPD-006 (but that did not make sense since I did not think it was a proof).
Thanks Prethen for confirming it is not a proof. I had not considered the possibility of proof dies used for business strikes. I will reach out to ANA to see if I can borrow the book and will keep this thread updated.
Stay tuned...

I do not have that book, just downloaded from the archive so the pics are not that good. I was referencing Kevin Flynn's book and it only indicates that they were proofs and I just did not think that seemed correct. GrapeCollects, is there a reference for the business strikes? I would love to see it.
Or...if you think it might be a different RPD, let me know. I am compulsive/obsessive enough to desire confirmation for this one |

This was a very heavily polished die.
Thank you paralyse! I rechecked the shield in hand, and while the vertical lines are correct, I did notice a slight disturbance in the upper right corner of the shield that is most likely tooling. I would not have caught that without everyones help refocusing in.
I had personally graded it MS61/62 Obverse, MS 63 Reverse: Net 62. |

For the 1866/1--6, I think you took a little more of a hit due to the details grade but it could have been worse. I could not really find any good comparisons except an XF for sale at $210 by a dealer that I do not necessarily agree with.
It is always easy to look back and think that you could have take a better route. However, I do feel you did the best for your situation because you were able to liquify some funds for your father without the risk of later fighting with a dissatisfied buyer. That would have taken valuable time and energy away from your family. |

This is one of the few coins I have personally submitted to PCGS years ago. Just wondering what your thoughts on the grade are. There are many die polish lines but it came back as tooled and I still cannot figure out where the tooling is.
These are new images with my new imaging system for those of you who may remember when I first posted it years ago. I can provide closeups of any areas that you would like to see.,
Let me know what YOU grade it at (and if you see any tooling). Thanks!

I am going to going to go out on a limb and say yes but it is hard to tell which one with the pictures. To figure out which variety, we will need a full close up image of the ribbon, a close up image of the date including the ball, a full image of the reverse, close of up of the D on the reverse and a close up of United with the stem in the picture. Those will contain the die markers to help narrow it down. All images need to be clear without the harsh lighting.
As for value add, I will let those wiser that I chime in.
Cheers! |
