Jays-Dad - That is not a problem. Cayon's reference on Spanish issues covers all metals from the 600s to date and most types are illustrated. If you have pictures of the copper types I might be able to attribute them.

Great to hear from you on this. I posted the pics in the following thread. I can scan each of them, but all I've got is a cheap digital camera so no good pictures. http://goccf.com/t/29494

Hi Les, They are not for sale right now. Good luck in you hunt. I know a few collectors who are actively looking for that set. Bob

Sure a lot of money for a book alright. Just now thinking... Is it really worth that much? Can I live without it? And who'll maybe lend it to me?

Goodasgold - Any book is not really needed unless you are planning to buy really RARE pieces or spend a lot on a number of common coins. Without a reference like this - you would be assured of buying a fake or passing up a true rarity in the Portrait series. I guarantee that. I am of course referring to any series where individual dies vary. Hubbed coins can be treated using a far less complex reference, but punched dies are too complex for a generic type text. The only other way is to collect pictures of 100's of coins and compare them for yourself.

Thanks for sound advice, Bob. And does a 'rare date list' exist somewhere? I'm about to buy a 1764 Carolus III 8R that I'm told is fairly hard to find in this gVF cond.
Anyway, it's still a really nice looking coin.
Cheers,

There is no such "Rare date list" that I am aware of. Such a list would have to include photos of each die type to be of any real value and to avoid alterations and counterfeits. Then when you add condition to the mix of rarity, you are looking for a text that has not yet been produced. I don't even know anyone who is attempting that yet.
Back to 1823 (for Mexican 8Rs only) there is in fact a condition rarity listing in addition to the overall rarity by type. Dunigan made that attempt in "Resplandores", but it is only an approximation based on his and Parker's experience. Some people question the accuracy of that data, but personally I find it helpful.

Swamperbob: Noticed that you have an interest in counterfeit coins. Did you happen to follow the German-20Mark thread? I still have not been able to determine origin of said coin.

Hello folks,
Just me again. I was just wondering, is there any reference material about Chinese Chopmark coins; especially values? Curious minds want to know.
Thankx
GOD Bless

Hi,
I saw your reference listing on Gilboy's Columnarios. I was wondering if you where to procure a reasonably priced copy? I like Pillars very much but only have the extremely common 1756 & 59 Mo 8R's as well as a few minors. Is this book in English? Does it provide a rarity scale or relative pricing?

The book is a high quality reference with a scale of rarity - not prices. That is the best because prices fluctuate so much. The information is unlikely to change much (unless a big hoard is discovered). It is great for varieties and for diagnosing forgeries. The price new is $125. I have not see a used copy for sale yet. I suspect that most collectors would find it a valuable reference and KEEP it. Estate sales are possible but I know quite a few people looking.
