Just picked this coin up on ebay and purchased it for review and possible return. The grade looks to me that it could maybe be XF but the toning I know nothing about. I'd hate for it to come back from grading as damaged. Is the discoloration naturally occurring (in which case might be a positive) or is it man-made in which case the coin goes back to the seller.

Your thoughts on grading and the toning would be very much appreciated!

I think that the scratches and dings alone on the obverse are enough to warrant a details grade. I don't see this in a straight grade holder. I would return it.

On a circulated coin like this, that kind of toning suggests a past cleaning and retoning. I'd say it has VF-35 sharpness, but details from a past cleaning and the obverse scratches.

Agree it has been cleaned and imo is VF-30. This is fine if you are filling a Whitman holder but it's not likely to ever see a 3rd party grading slab.
