*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's essential to have it in the title. *** I missed the cleaning. It's obvious now. I will definitely look harder from now on. Cheap lesson.

1931-S A great Lincoln Cent to collect. Hopefully yours will "re-tone" to a more respectable color so it won't be so obvious of a previous cleaning.

To CCF! Still a nice coin, even with the cleaning.

Thanks. I picked this up at a new local shop. We hadn't had a coin shop around for a decade or more, so I was pretty stoked to see one open up. I second-guessed myself and the owner was very convincing on the not being cleaned part. Two of the coins I picked up from him were cleaned, needles to say I need to work on my skills at detecting cleaned coins.

Hard to tell much from the photos. Suggest using a white background so we can gauge your white balance. Coin appears to be mint state but I can't read the luster at all. Why are you so confident about it being cleaned? Did it lose the cartwheel luster? A few stains or toning doesn't necessarily mean the coin has been cleaned.

I would go back and have a very nice conversation with him about what you now no. Not that he is obligated to do anything. But if he wants your business maybe some kind of in store credit or maybe not. But if you are nice about it they may work with you. It would tell me personally weather or not I would do further business with them.

Are we talking chemically cleaned? I don't see hairlines that would indicate brushing or rubbing.

I am unsure of the cleaning method used, TPG deemed it cleaned, I think in the upper left of the reverse I can make out some faint cleaning. Maybe these images are better.

MUCH better pictures, it has been lightly cleaned, at least no SOS pad job. It appears to be an older cleaning as the coin has somewhat retoned. It's still pretty nice, like no hits or major distractions. It's a good candidate for a long window sill retone.
I've been around many questionable 31S's. A nice, problem MS/AU coin still typically trades in the Good/Fine grade ranges depending on the problem and how the coin looks. All is not lost...
I take it you bought this raw and sent it in yourself? If the dealer you bought it from is smart and reasonable, just explain what happened to him. I have a good relationship with my fav local shop - he would instantly refund what I paid him. That's not a bad deal for either of you really, he can still sell it in the cleaned slab for G money and you are made whole.

I call BS on the TPG for tagging it cleaned. Old cleaning yes but I've seen far worse in a straight holder. They WANT you to crack and resubmit it. That is their biz model nowadays.
