I very much liked the design of this coin and on impulse picked one. Think I would have like the 1988 better, but the first year of the Macau SAR makes 2000 a noteworthy date also. Did not bother with having the full set as they are alike in design.

But I am not into modern coins, or bullion ones, and am having some buyers remorse over it. Would you call this a bullion coin or a commemorative?

It is on catalog as a Macau coin, and the mintage is small. But being produced by The Royal Mint in the UK is strange. At the time it was issued think it carried only a small premium, but I could not find records. How would you classify this kind of coin?

jecz79, that's a beautiful coin! Numista lists it as a commemorative, but it's value is primarily that of the gold. Although the mintage is low (2500), I'm not sure how many collectors of Macau coins are out there.

As for classification, I would not call it "a bullion coin", since its weight (3.99 g) and fineness (22k) are not the nice round numbers that bullion dealers prefer. I would not call British sovereigns "bullion coins" for the same reason, even though they are often treated as such.

This is a commemorative NCLT coin, that just happens to be made of gold.

Thanks.

@sap you mentioned the sovereigns, those I split between coins that circulated and the bullion strikes of Elizabeth II. The most recent sovereigns are either commemorative or bullion Depends how one want to look at them. These commemoratives for Macau were done to the same standard as recent sovereigns. They match the half, full and double sovereign.

I liked the coin and will keep it. Even if I am thinking of all these modern commemoratives that get done to a fixed standard as bullion even when the design is changing between years or series.

But I can see the point about 22k not being bullion, that is a different valid criteria to distinguish.

With Macau turning control back over to China at end of 1999, so I assumed this is the last issue minted under Portugal. I'm glad the reverse design Walls of St Paul Church was used to commemorated this last set. A decent purchase.
