I wonder how often it happens that participants in auctions don't end up getting the lots they have won? Might sound like a silly question but I have had a few bad experiences and there is one auction house I have given up on altogether due to the number of stuff ups the have made. I have also had a few problems with another auction house but they have been very good ever since and look after me now. I'm happy to continue to deal with them in future auctions. I know mistakes happen and that things can be sorted eventually. How many times should one have to try to contact the auctioneer about missing items and ask for help? Phone calls and emails are not being returned. Makes me think that there are a few other bidders who have been affected and that its not an isolated incident. What to do? Anyone else in the same boat?

I have only ever used "Buy it now" so I can only comment on that. One time I did not get a coin I bought because it was sold "in person" and the listing was not removed in time. Seller apologized and offered me a discount on something else. Other than that one time, I always receive what I buy.

My major beef was with ebay Oz. in the early days, around 2000,just scammers that listed a certain coin and then sent the buyer something else.Lot better the last 20 years.

Have auction purchased from Great Collections, Stacks, Heritage, IAG, Roxburys, Numisbid and Status. All have delivered. Biggest issue with the US and HK auctions especialy is the final price is not the final price as besides the usual commissions there are hefty shipping fees, insurance, currency buy/sell split and currency transaction fee. Then they add another 10% as GST. And why historically the commisions on auctions was a shilling per guinea such that the buyer would pay the bid in guineas and the seller would get a pound (a guinea being 21 shillings and a pound 20 shillings). So used to be under 5% commission and now they are 22% and then another 10% on that 22% so in effect 24.2% commission+tax.

I won a couple of silver coins for 1 cent each and the seller still posted and I received them Honest sellers post and shady ones don't. That's how it's always been on ebay.

A number of times on ebay - win auction with low price bid, coin never delivered, "lost in mail", dealer quickly refunds money - a few weeks later same dealer, same coin listed for a much higher opening bid.

Yes,run into that scenario a couple of times over the years. Also,i purchased a high grade 1938 Crown from USA ebay a few years back,Seller had second thoughts about shipping to Aust. and a few days later did a PayPal refund. Only problem was the OZ $ dropped in value and along with PayPal fees the PayPal refund was nearly A$80 short of the original payment. Found another way to get ripped off.

I only bid and purchase on ebay from those sellers that I know. These days, I rarely, if ever, take a chance on an unknown seller. As for the big auction houses, I have no issues with any of them in the US or the UK. Always get exactly what I bid on and pay for, I also pay promptly as soon as I am alerted to have won and the shipping price is added. Some book dealers (K&F) ship my winning lots to me before I have paid, as I am known to them after so many years of buying and bidding.
