This is a thread for examples of slabbed world coins where the grades seem ... well, ridiculous.

Sure I recognize the TPGs have their guidelines, but sometimes it results in grades that just make you laugh because the coin is so ugly compared to others available on the market.

First up, this 1612 SIlesian coin graded AU53 by PCGS:

Here's a raw example graded lower by the seller:

(c) Salon Numismatyczny Mateusz Wojcicki

Thoughts?

Please add similar examples you've run across!

Perhaps it is the seller who under graded HIS coin.
I am no grader and I feel that I undergrade my coins most of the time.

By TPG standards, that's a resounding YES.

Most of the European auction houses I deal with appear to weigh eye appeal significantly when they assign a grade. So a coin with wealky struck areas, multiple missing letters in the legends, etc. gets downgraded from whatever "technical" grade it might get by applying standards the TPGs use.

To complete the silliness scale for this type, here is another raw example from the same auction house they graded VF:

(c) Salon Numizmatyczny Mateusz Wojcicki

So we see on their scale the PCGS AU53 would likely not even make VF!

When you consider the way these were stuck and the softness in many, grades appear to be correct.

As long as consistent grading is used being technical or market I'm fine with it. It's when they use whatever advantages the seller that I have issues with. That being said hammered coinage has a lot of variables that can sometimes make grades assigned look ridiculous as you point out. It's more art than science imo when grading these.

Fair enough. Hopefully this thread will help prove that adage about "Buy the coin, NOT the slab" i.e., some high technical grades wind up getting assigned to coins that are relatively ugly.

Another one I ran across recently at MS64. Should be a TOP POP stunner, right?
