The press release doesn't tell the whole story.

I'll hope to add an un-slabbed example to my 2024 ASE purchases. With mintage of 500,000 it shouldn't be too hard to get one. The "first 50,000" NGC versions won't be of interest.

Hey guys, actual PC gamer here. You don't want anything do with the "gaming collectables" market, it's a total sham to drive prices as high as possible. I would not touch any of this with a ten foot pole. There is a good documentary about the issue on YT somewhere. I would let the star-struck gamers burn their money on these products.

Just because a Company, ( Like The FUJI Releases 2022 ) comes out with an attraction, Based on an American Favorite Coin, Does NOT mean these are " going " to be collectible To Me.

The Last thing from a Coin Collecting Prospective, I Believe The Mints have Sold Out to Another Fancy Label , Not The Coins.

The FUJI Releases were presented to the American public as " The Edition ", the U S Mint's did NOT produce, It was offered up to the American public at Over $1,500.00....I Did Not Care then, Nor do I Now for One.

Our Hobby is Clearly under a Changing Guard for the Future of Coin Collecting, Just I do Not Agree, Collect what makes you Happy, Mint Marks, Privy Marks, Labels, Bullion etc ......Best Wishes, MD

I had to find out what you're even talking about, it came back to me pretty quick. Not Fuji, it was the country of Fiji that produced what the US Mint didn't. I got what I wanted in 2021, I bit for it again last year on the Peace/Morgan. Not this year.
But you're right, collect what you want, wasn't even a blip on my radar that Fiji made these. I see the raw Fiji coins sell for easy less than you mentioned, I see fill graded sets for that, but individual ungraded for maybe $130, I didn't look for deals, I couldn't believe that was the price they charged initially, but not looking to debate.
There is also that Daniel Carr mint that makes restrike coins similar to what Fiji did, such as 2009 proof ASEs that the US Mint didn't make.
In general I am ok with the privy ASEs as long as it doesn't turn in to several a year.
I think it's possible that these will be a hard thud and they don't do it again, I think they've overestimated what the appeal will be.

Worth quoting.

It was my understanding that it's a free game, how do they burn money to get these?

I understand (sort of) how this works.
As an ASE collector, I just want the coin, it sounds like it'll be easy enough just to get what I need without going through all the BS to just get a raw one.

This is a terrible idea for many reasons, but it's worth noting this important aspect from the OP's article:

Quote:
Nice Gang (www.NiceGang.com), a new mobile gaming studio, follows DC Comics as the second company to collaborate with the United States Mint (www.USMint.gov) to promote special, limited-edition coins. The innovative collaboration between Nice Gang and the U.S. Mint will reach a new generation of collectors.

Eighth Era, the first mobile video game title from Nice Gang, will provide players early access to unique silver bullion coins with a first-of-its-kind privy mark. [emphasis added]

Why is the Mint partnering with a brand new company for their very first game? This is the first time the Mint is offering a coin in this way, and they chose a company with zero experience? It blows my mind. How do they know it'll even work?

Plus, I've said it before and I'll say it again, privy marks are gimmicky. But if someone wants to collect these coins - and that's certainly their prerogative - it's unfair that they have to play a video game in order to even access the coins.

One doesn't have to play the video game to access the coin.

That wasn't clear from the OP's article, but I see now where you quoted from the Mint's website. The OP's article states that the game will give you early access to the coin. The question is, what is the timeline and how will access work in practice? Regardless, it's still a marketing gimmick to me.

Most "free" games like this are indeed free to play, but if you want to make any significant progress (which will probably be required to get any of the tangible collectibles) you typically end up paying for extras like stronger weapons/armor or additional turns without waiting for a timer or watching ads. Otherwise, it takes forever and loses appeal. The hope is that the game is enjoyable (or addictive) enough that you do pay at least a little something. Ad revenue brings in only so much, and it can take a small percentage of playing-players to make money.

Here's what I found at the Nice Gang site:

Exclusive!
United States Mint Collaboration
Unprecedented offer
Nice Gang follows DC Comics as the second company to collaborate with the United States Mint to promote special, limited-edition coins. The first product in this collaboration is a bullion American Silver Eagle, issued in the lowest mintage ever and featuring a star privy mark.

How to get them
Eighth Era players can gain access to this special offering from the United States Mint in one of two ways:
#8205;
1. Special Player Price: Starting in the next two weeks, all players who have achieved level 7 or higher will be contacted via in-game notification for purchasing access of one American Silver Eagle at a special player price — $80 including shipping and handling. Nice Gang will update players on social media and with in-game announcements when this goes live.

2. Legendary Collector Reward: Players who win Legendary gold-plated coins in the finale 2 week tournaments will additionally receive an American Silver Eagle with a Star Privy Mark, while supplies last.

For more information about this historic partnership, head to the United States Mint website.
