Basel Schützenfest 5 Francs (Shooting Thaler) Base-Metal Copy - Any Historic Interest?

aquilacavallo New Member United States 47 Posts	Posted 09/06/2024 9:34 pm Long ago, someone gave me this base-metal copy of a Swiss shooting thaler (X#S14, 1879, 20.54g). It's an obvious copy; the metal looks nothing like silver (blue-gray, I'm guessing pewter) and the edge is plain. I am just wondering if there's any historic or numismatic value to this piece besides its simply being a nice-looking copy. I wonder why someone bothered to make such an obvious copy, given the color of the metal. I'm not too interested in the dollar value, just wondering whether there might be a longer story. manosgerms Valued Member United States 136 Posts	Posted 09/08/2024 1:31 pm So... apparently this WAS also coined in "white metal" The guy who will probably know this is Mr Richter https://www.sincona.com/en/juerg-richter.aspx He is the authority on such stuff and it is from his book that it is mentioned that they were coined such HOWEVER, the coin you have looks too poor a strike just from your photos to be a genuine coin. I have the silver version of it and it is just beautifully struck. But if someone will know for sure it is him Report this Post to the Staff

And no full catalog that I could find. The coin pictured looks nice to me. All I can say. White metal versions do not age well, it would be normal to look worse than a silver version.
