Went on a hunt yesterday in a new location which is the success part of this post. I've made 3 recent requests thus far for permission to search private property. One politely said "No" while a second seemed open to the idea but has not responded back (made two visits, will not venture a 3rd but left my contact info).

So I discovered an owner that I lived near in my old neighborhood, took a chance and knocked on his door. Explaining my purpose for the visit he rather quickly said "Sure". His brother owns the lot next door and also agreed. Total area to search is 4 acres of an area that used to be farm land in the not too distant past. Four other homes nearby with similar acreage. If they see me at work, maybe they will stop to ask me what I'm doing and open more doors.

I've only search less than one half of one front yard but only uncovered junk (see pic) thus far. Still hopeful for some interesting finds. Can only manage a 3-4 hour search before I'm worn out.

My approach has been to ignore the really low ( < 6) and really high (199) numeric indicators. I was getting a lot of signals ( I'm assuming lot of iron in the ground) but few were relatively consistent. Unearthed those in the constant 25-80 range.

1. Maybe broken horseshoe
2. Shotgun shells
3. Junk foil
4. Thought it a spoon bowl but after cleaning doubt it

I eventually put the detector in discrimination mode but still got lots of signals, most of which I ignored. So, my fellow diggers, how would you have approached this search given the little info I've provided? Am I totally off base?

Some people seem to have been extremely careful with their money and valuables. I recently searched the large garden of a house built in the 1840s that was being torn down for redevelopment, and found only junk...

I feel your pain.

There are 2 YouTube channels that I watch a lot: Green Mountain Metal Detecting (GMMD) and Quarter Hoarder (QH). Both have good luck searching. The former in the hills of Vermont, the latter in homesteads and fields of PA.

QH posts an end search roundup that occasionally includes all the junk found which vastly outweighs the good stuff. GMMD occasionally mentions the hours spent finding nothing. So I'll continue to plod along and hope I find some cool stuff along the way. And, hey, it's the only exercise I'm getting.

I've hunted maybe 50 properties in the past, I always hit the front yard first and cherry pick the high tones. I've found close to 400 old silvers over the years with this method. Next is the line between house and mailbox. Many Indian Head cents found near the ditch line close to the road where kids might have sat to watch the traffic 100+ years ago. Also, I realized long ago when 150 y.o. farmyards I found barren that crops used to be planted right up to the house, or the front yard may have been where the hogs were penned, or fill dirt brought in. That, and the fact that before WWII, folks just didn't have spare money to lose. I would return to some of these yards later, after I'd cherry picked 'em and I'd then hunt the low conductors (gold, nickels, relics etc).
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72
