Seems there are some 'sellers' (read scammers) out there who must have their own coin rolling equipment. Rolls of commemorative $2 coins are being offered as 'security ' rolls with tamper-proof seals and the pictures show the commemorative coin at one end and the equivalent obverse at the other. They look very much like genuine rolls.

The contents of the roll are junk circulated coins. The pictures of the rolls look authentic and some look very much like Cotton and Co rolls (but are not).

Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted but just wanted to raise the issue in case there are others out there who are not aware of these scams.
I guess it might be wise to limit purchases from ebay to lower value items and only buy the more valuable items from reputable dealers? ebay seems full of dodgy sellers?

Hi SallyG, are you able to provide a link to these rolls? Thanks

Yes there are some scams in rolled coins, But some sellers are not scamming on e-bay.
As for dealers I always look properly or use a loupe for singular coins also some dealers have there own coin wrapping device, both dealers can deceive you just my opinion.

Yes, happened to me and I suspect a few others too.

On reviewing the seller's feedback I see several other identical looking items sold previously. The buyers may have kept the rolls intact and not yet realise what they have actually bought?

Not sure about the legality of posting links to those items. I would suggest that if anyone is considering buying a 'security' roll of coins that you ask questions and get positive information about the origin of the roll. The pictures look very convincing and even when I received the roll I did not suspect anything was wrong. It was only once I opened it that I realised what was going on.

I'm becoming more and more wary of ebay. Too many dodgy sellers. ebay don't seem to do much even when I have pointed out some dodgy and unethical practices. I guess there is always karma to sort things out?

If you're not comfortable with posting a link could you tell me what I should type into ebay's search window to find these rolls ... I've had a look and can't find what you're referring to?

I always use PayPal when purchasing on ebay just in case the seller is being dishonest. That way I have an avenue that I can follow up for a refund.

Have a look at $2 rolls -particularly the earlier releases of colored coins. I got stooged on a 2013 roll. I couldn't tell it wasn't a genuine Cotton and Co roll even when I had it in my hand.

The seller was only a newcomer to ebay however had a sales record with 100% positive feedback. The sales included quite a few 2013 commemorative $2 rolls. I notice in the "sold" listings that there are a number of sellers who have recently joined ebay and have sold a surprising number of identical 'Cotton and Co' rolls. Sure, that doesn't prove much but I very much doubt that there would be so many sellers out there who have so many 'Cotton and Co' rolls of the same coins for sale. Many of those rolls of commemorative coins are sold at prices much lower than average too - just makes me think the scammers are happy to offload the dodgy rolls quickly. A lot of ebay sellers re-list items if they don't get high enough prices so sellers who accept abnormally low prices for rolls of commemorative coins look a bit suspicious to me.
A close look at some of the pictures of those 'Cotton and Co' rolls show coins that have obviously seen some circulation. I thought Cotton and Co rolls only contained uncirculated coins?
Anyway for me it is a case of once bitten, twice shy. I won't be purchasing any more 'Cotton and Co' rolls from ebay.

I'm a little confused now!

Are you saying that you purchased a roll of $2 coins advertised as being 2013 purple coronation coins but only the one showing on top was?

Yep, one end showed the purple coronation coin and the other was a 2013 obverse. All inner coins were circulated coins of various years and poor quality. If I had kept the roll intact I would not have known the difference. I wanted the coins to make up some sets. That is why I opened it up. I suspect there are other collectors out there that have purchased similar rolls but have not opened them because they want to keep the roll intact. Nasty surprise coming one day for someone!

Had a similar thing happen when I bought two identical mint sets from two separate sellers. Sets arrived on same day, quickly checked them and put them aside. On checking closer a few days later realised one set had a couple of coins swapped over for 'wrong' coins and the cardboard sealed again. Whoops! My stuff up. I always check closely now. Hopefully we live and learn?

I just had a look at recent sold items for these rolls on ebay ... it's strange that none give a specific sold price but seeing what individual coins are selling for I would expect they wouldn't come cheap!

When you purchased your roll was the seller inferring that the roll in question was made up of all 2013 $2 coronation coins?

When a best offer is accepted, ebay does not show the price the seller got.

The seller, susru-2118, is now NARU, probably due to (-4) feedback score.
All 4 sold item listings have been removed.

Sellers pulling stunts like this are actually self-destructive.
