I'm thinking XF but hoping maybe AU.

All opinions welcome.
Thanks

Pics too dark to see surface details clearly.

My initial thought was AU.
But then I amended that thought by adding "by American grading standards".
Canadian standards tend to be a bit tougher.
So I would probably expect an XF from them.

The pictures aren't the best, but it looks like it could be AU to me as well. I'd also guess it's cleaned as there are significant hairlines on the reverse, most notably below the date, but also in other areas and on the obverse as well. It's always possible that's just the pictures accentuating something that's not as bad when you have the coin in hand but I'd assume it's cleaned based on what I can see. That will typically cut the value rough in half from the assigned grade. Keep that in mind if this is something you are buying.

Thanks for the feedback gang. If it were to grade au is it worth spending the money ?

If it was cleaned it was prior to 1945. This one and a couple of others I have had been sitting in a cigar box with dad's war medals since he decommissioned out of WW II in Newfoundland in late 1945. I'll try and post pics of another tomorrow.

Even if it graded in the US or Canada, the cost to grade it would be twice or more what it would ever be worth. Kepp it as a personal treasure with nice history.

Doesn't look like a cleaning solvent was used. Looks more like someone brushed it with something that scratched the surfaces.
