String and Son is a paper supplier that also processes coins. So now I'm left wondering whether my rolls were culled and processed by String and Son or by another processor who uses String and Son wrapper rolls.
With so many roll hunters there must be others who've searched machine rolls not processed by Loomis. I'm interested in what folks are finding.
If Loomis starts culling the hobby is going to suffer. |

This was my first time searching non Loomis/customer wrapped rolls I got from a bank. After about five rolls the light finally went off.there was not a single copper cent in any roll, they had all been culled. I know the US does not have an ARP program like here in Canada so I assume the supplier culled the copper and silver on their own.
Is this now common among all third party providers ? I hope it doesn't kill coin roll hunting like it did in Canada for the most part.

A couple of thoughts from a Canadian who does the same but in reverse. 1. Even if you cross the boarder then what, most banks here won't give you the time of day unless you have an account with them. 2. Once you acquire some rolls what do you do with your culls. In Canada I have no where to return any form of US coinage. 3. Types of rolls (bank wrapped or customer wrapped). In Canada bank or,Loomis wrapped are pretty much the kiss of death because of the governments' ARP program. 4. Denominations to search, with no cent since 2012 you're basically searching for old silver.
I get my rolls from my brother-in-law who's originally from upstate New York and is kind enough to bring me 20-30 dollars of Pennies and nickels every 4-6 weeks when he goes back to visit family. When I started I was searching everything dollars, Halves, quarters etc. but it became expensive and I felt bad asking the brother in-law to not just get rolls but return them as well. Now just Pennies and nickels and I donate the my penny culls to coins for kids. It's a fun hobby that I'm prepared to loose money on for a good cause.

Why is this quarter so heavily frosted, particularly the obverse. The fields, although you can't really tell from the photos, are/were absolute mirrors. I have lots of PL sets from the mid 60's but they mostly resemble polished nickel. Also have lots of business strikes but they tend to be white.
I read an old tread where someone referred to them as first strike PL coins. Is that correct and does that mean all PL's had intentional frosting which eventually disappeared over time from die polishing or some other process.
This is what keeps me scratching my head.
Cheers and thanks.

Not surprised, I debated as MD but thought I'd take shot.
@makescents is right it might still be there. I'm going to have another look with a better lighting setup. I'll let you guys know if I find anything.
Thanks for the responses! |

Thanks for the feedback gang. If it were to grade au is it worth spending the money ?
If it was cleaned it was prior to 1945. This one and a couple of others I have had been sitting in a cigar box with dad's war medals since he decommissioned out of WW II in Newfoundland in late 1945. I'll try and post pics of another tomorrow. |

Can anybody offer background on these. My dad bought one back in the day and it sat in a trunk until,I cracked it last year. The silver coins have started turning black with some gold tone. They look like there just average circulation strike coins.
I'll post pics of the quarter and half under separate threads as they have some interesting issues. Cheers and thanks

Well I thought it was an innocuous question.
@goofball; many thanks for the reply. I also collect modern coins, I really like a number of designs on some of the commemoratives. I hope moderns can garner a little more love within the forums.
@DBM; Relax, clad/platted I was just using it as a generic reference. Your jab was unnecessary and not appreciated but I'll make you a deal. I'll learn the very basics if you learn how to have a constructive dialogue without launching personal attacks.
As a pillar of the community I expected better.
You have a wonderful day.

This kind of dovetail's into @raynac's post. Why are there so few modern circulation strike coins posted on the forum for grading ? Is it as @Okiecoiner opined that they are essentially worthless and always will be. (excluding errors & varieties). Is it pointless to collect post bullion coins because they will never be considered collectable and probably will never appreciate in value. I ask because the US forum seems to have a never ending stream of random modern circulation strike coins posted for grading. US coins are also just clad coins so what's the difference. Yes l know the US has 100x or whatever more collectors but that doesn't explain (at least not to me) why so few clad coins are posted in the Cdn forum versus the US forum.

I search both sides of the border and frankly would rather hunt US than CDN as there seems to be infinitely more varieties and errors than Canadian. Bugs; up here the Alloy Recovery Program (ARP). Zero chance of finding real nickel or silver unless they are customer wrapped rolls, that and no Pennies to search for over a decade. On the US side, corrosion, I swear 30% of every penny roll is corroded and I mean heavily corroded. On the positive, never had a problem at any branch of my bank either obtaining or returning rolls. I have no problem searching US Loomis rolls but wouldn't touch one up here in Canada. |
