As a young (and not very expert) collector in the early '80s, I decided to try gathering (mostly modern) coins from as many different countries as I could. At some point I even started maintaining an alphabetical list of all the places I had coins from.
I had to drop a few countries from my list when I sold all of my "good" coins in '82, but the vast majority of countries I ever had coins from are still represented in my pile of "cheap" coins.
My list includes "normal" countries (including the U.S.A.) as well as "conglomerations" (there has to be some official term for this) like British Caribbean Territories, European Union and French Equatorial Africa.
The total number of places I have coins from is 123.
Does anyone else around here have coins from lots of countries?

According to my spreadsheet, I have coins from 55 different countries (including the USA). More than I thought.

Looks like I have my only Euro coin listed under its country of origin (France). If I count EU as a separate entity, that makes 56.

My OFEC count is at 213, but I'm sure other members like triggersmob, NumisRob, wannabfree & Dorado have higher counts.

Quote: My OFEC count is at 213 ... Nice job! It depends on how you count. If I count according to modern national boundaries, I probably have about 80, the majority of these coming from my birthyear world coin set. But if I count "issuers" maybe closer to 150. In this case a place like Italy (1 modern country) becomes more than a dozen in my collection: Kingdom of Sicily, Duchies of Ferrara, Mantua, Milan, Modena and Reggio, Parma, Tuscany, Urbino; Republics of Florence, Lucca, Venice, Cities of Ascoli, Rimini; Papal States). Low Countries (normally counting for at most 3 "countries" becomes another ten (Lower Lotharingia, Duchy of Brabant, Counties of Flanders, Frisia, Hainaut, Holland, Namur, Bishoprics of Liege, Utrecht; Abbey of Nivelles). For the region of Silesia (which KM counts under Germany but nobody else does), I've got another 8 or so (Duchies of Krosno, Liegnitz-Brieg, Teschen, Troppau, Wurttemburg-Oels, Silesian Evangelical Estates, Bishopric of Breslau, Hapsburg Silesia, etc...) And for the rest of "Germany," well, the sky's the limit (though I probably only have another 15 there including a few modern city notgeld issues). And you probably thought it was a simple question ...

"One from every country" is as close as I get to having a "theme" or "goal" for my collection. And given that my collection is over 14,000 coins and goes all the way back to ancients, I have a rather larger number of countries than the Wikipedia or CIA Factbook "lists of countries" allow for. Back in 2007, my OFEC list was 581 "countries" long when I posted it on the forum, in this old thread. My count has since grown to over 700.

Sounds like Sap should be a member of one of my online collector groups- if not already and I don't recognize the name.

According to my Excel worksheet on my computer, I have coins from 219 different countries. However this includes a number of former countries and states that no longer issue their own coins (i.e. Scotland and Reunion) and places like St Helena, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, Jresey and Guernsey.
