I found this after heavy rain eroded part of my in-laws yard. My metal detecting knowledge is limited so I researched sediment build up on buried metal and can't seem to find anything. The condition prevents dating based on shape, but the blackish color penetrating the sedimentary layer makes me think wrought iron. The estimated length is 3".

Thoughts?

Did you get your screen name idea from the movie?

It was a work nickname and the guy that gave it to me was referencing the movie. Link below explains it with more detail.

@rain, I know very little about dating nails, but the small amount that I do is based on the shape of the body and the head, with I believe square cross-sections predating the modern round ones. Here is a link to a potentially helpful website, although you may very well know loads more about this stuff already.

@Spence Thanks that helped a lot. I was mostly finding articles speaking to a specific aspect of the dating but yours seems to cross reference everything. Awesome

I've dug many hundreds of the square nails you're talking about, it's hard to tell with this one though.

Most aspects make me lean to pre 1830 (hand made) but then I get stuck on the curve to it. The curve from being removed long ago suggest machine made.
