and then some!

So, unless you don't know, my goal for this thread is to try and find every single coin issued for general circulation in Australia, by year's end. Kinda like DG's (unsuccessful) wavy hunt and 3M's Big Noodle.

I guess there's only one rule here, being that the coin must be obtained from circulation. Anything else (eg. bought or obtained from a non-roll source) must be mentioned separately. I do have a contact at my local bank that is keeping an eye out for some coins too.

I'll also mention any foreign coins I find or buy, or any NCLT stuff that ends up in a roll. This is mostly the Great Aussie Coin Hunt sets, but there are plenty other dollar NCLTs and some 20c ones too.

-

I do have a bit of a head start, as I have noodled every single five cent, ten cent and Twenty Cent from circulation, but just for the record here's some stats on which coins need to be noodled:

FIVE CENTS:

2019 JC (in good condition, the one I have is darkened)

TEN CENTS:

Any old years in a good grade

Twenty Cents:

Some of the oldest years without the disgusting stains
2001 ACT 20 cent (in good condition, mine is disgusting)

FIFTY CENTS:

1985
2000 Millennium Incuse (scarce)

ONE DOLLAR:

2016 changeover
2019 Hunt Letters: B, C, E, F, H, I, J, M, N, O, Q, S, T, U, V, W, X, Z
2021 Hunt Letters: A, B, F, H, I, P, U, V, W, X, Y, Z
2022 Hunt Letters: G, H, I, K, L, O, R, T, W, Y

TWO DOLLARS:

2012 Red Poppy (very very unlikely)
2013 Coronation
2016 Blue Olympics
2016 Black Olympics
2016 Yellow Olympics
2016 Paralympics
2017 Pink Possum
2018 Red Commonwealth
2018 Blue Commonwealth
2018 Armistice
2019 Blackboard
2020 Firefighters
2020 Black Olympics
2021 Ambulance

I hope you will all join me on this year long journey to complete my quest.

One last word; if I do not complete this goal by years end, that's fine. I'll just create a part two thread for 2024 and continue from there!

Will you be including 2023 coins as they come out?
Have you noodled a 2021 $1 Mob of roos already?
How about the 1988 20cent?

Good luck OzCollection.

It's much more fun when you have plenty of coins left to find.

When you get down to the last couple of coins your dedication will be sorely tested.

I've noodled more 1988 20 cent coins than fire fighter $2

Time for some As to Qs

crab eater -

a. yes I will, but I don't see that happening until maybe? the latter half of the year.

b. actually yes I have noodled a 2021 MOR! Now I'm confused to whether or not they have actually been struck for circulation or that just escaped a set.

c. I don't think so. 200000 is the number on the RAM a website but it is generally accepted that the period between 1983-1993, 1988 included is generally mint set only. If I find a mint set only year that will be certainly one good find.

Coinfrog - sure is. Luckily I'm already finished with half the denominations so my work is a little bit easier.

MachinMachinMan - thanks I'll need it. I think I have a lot of dedication to coin noodling. It took me three months to find all the Twenty Cent Pieces! Also what happened to the big noodle?

I've discovered I enjoy noodling much more than blogging about it. I also think most readers were getting bored with me posting about finding the same coins all the time.

When I find any of the coins I'm still looking for I will post them.

G'day mate. I was a 21 year old American sailor on one of the ships representing the US Navy in Sydney for the Royal Australian Navy's 75 Anniversary. What an exciting enjoyable experience that was for me. Anyhow I'm not totally sure I understand your request but I have a 1981 10 cent and a 1981 20 cent that are both in pretty nice shape. I've just been holding onto them for the last 37 years. Let me know if they're something you'd like to aquire.

I like the post but I can understand why some thought it was quite tiresome. Also noodle a bit, it more the sourcing the coins that's the problem as it can get quite heavy if you try to get too much. happy hunting

WEEK 1
(30/01/23 - 05/02/23)

Slim pickings for the first noodling week.

One new find is better than nothing, at least its NCLT:

Description: Dorothy Wall and Blinky Bill
Denomination: One Dollar
Year: 2009
Circulation or NCLT: NCLT, found in 2009 Baby Mint Set
Catalogue Value: $55

Meanwhile on the foreign coins/acquisition side of things here's a 1934 shilling from Fiji and a 2018 coloured two-dollar coin from the Solomon Islands which was produced by the RAM:

Stats:

One dollar coins still to find: 0/41
NCLT coins found: 1

OzCollection

yes, the RAM didn't issue any 20c platypus coins into circulation from 1983 to 1993 PLUS the 1995. There are quite a few Coat of Arms 50c which are Mint Set only including the 2004 Pointy " A's ".

Good luck with your journey

WEEK 2
(06/02/22 - 12/02/22)

This week was slightly better with a few good finds.

In this day and age if you find more than one 2019 GACH coin, I consider that a win.

Also found another 2021 GACH which I needed (actually the H AND the I were the first of their letters I found!)

And finally, a 1986 Peace dollar which is virtually uncirculated!

Stats:

One dollar coins still to find: 3/41
NCLT coins found: 1
