Evening all,

Query on this one please. I'd say aEF or AU-55 or close. Noted some wear around the lower parts of the date numbers (5 in particular) but not around the denticals/rim @ 6 o'clock. Much obliged.

I'll say AU-53 (Sheldon).

Die wear, not circulation wear. It looks like the obverse die actually rotated very slightly clockwise while the coin was being struck.

Better than a lot of 'aUNC' coins one can find listed, but there is no luster in these photos, or it's been completely toned over.

The two "dots" on the shield at around 5:00 are normal for Young Head 1853's. There is also a 3/2 overdate variety.

I think this is AU55 sharpness at worst. Quite a lovely coin.

Obv. I'm seeing the slanted denticles from 8.00 to a bit after 12.00, then they seem to straighten and slant the opposite way around to 3.00. Also are they die cracks from the eyebrow, and through the date?...last question...is only the O doubled?

Rev, denticles look slanted here and there as well.

Yes, two die cracks, and Strike Doubling on the O.
The 1st die crack goes from the eyebrow to the hairband.
The second is a bifurcated crack that runs through the date, passes through the bust, splits, and ends around IA

The W.W. on the bust was obliterated by the date die crack.

Thanks everyone.

@paralyse, interesting info there, thank you.

I have posted this previously as a question as to whether this could be that variety as there is a little nub just below the top curve of the 3, but with the die wear, I don't think anything else could be made out.
