In case you haven't seen it...
The Royal Canadian Mint has added to its web site a special two-coin set commemorating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum (i.e., 70th) Anniversary of ascending to the throne. The set includes a 0.9999 fine silver $20 coin from Canada and a 0.999 fine silver £2 coin from the UK (struck at the Royal Mint). The issue price for the set is $249.95 (CAD).
The maximum mintage for the set is 5,500 with 1,500 units allocated to the Royal Mint. The Royal Mint has already sold out of its 1,500 units, leaving 4,000 sets for direct R C M sales and sales by dealers (combined).
If you want one of the sets, it might be good to order sooner vs. later - the set might prove to be popular!

The $20 reverse design does not work for me.
The UK coin looks OK - any word on Canadian circ coins to commemorate the 70th anniversary?

Same here, the reverse of the Canadian one doesn't looks good to me. Otherwise, would pick them.
I was looking at the 2012 Canada, UK and Australia set for long time. Didn't find one with a good price.

Update... Both the 2 coin silver set and the Platinum coin are awaiting stock... anticipate sold out in a day or so.

So here's a curious thing. The UK release for this 2 coin set has a denomination of 2 pounds (as engraved on the obverse). It is 99.9% Silver, sized at 38.61mm and weighs 31.21g. There is also a crown issued by The Royal Mint with a denomination of 5 pounds (as engraved on the obverse). It is Sterling (92.5%) silver, sized at 38.61mm and weighs 28.28g. The two coins appear to be visually identical except for the denomination. It is odd that the coin with the lower FV actually has a higher intrinsic value. (Pure vs Sterling silver and 1 oz vs 0.9oz) Both are sold out at The Royal Mint and the RCM (Awaiting stock). Also the set is available on ebay for approx $100 over asking price. Will be interesting to see if that premium survives given this is a dual mint release and there is probably greater demand for UK releases than Canadian. |

Perhaps the historical significance of sterling silver is the reason? The set product UK coin needed to (closer) match the fineness of the Canadian, but the RM's single product coin had to "look" more worthy that the set coin, so they made it £5.

I must be missing something - the Five Pound coin I see listed on The Royal Mint web site is Copper-Nickel, not sterling silver; it's also a BU piece vs. Proof. The image included on the RM site for the two-coin Proof set shows a Five Pound coin, though the description for it lists the piece as Two Pounds. Definitely contradictory info being posted on their site! (The previous Canadian Mint/Royal Mint joint issue for QEII's 95th birthday included a UK Two Pound silver coin - that makes it seem likely the new set also includes a Two Pound coin vs. Five Pounds.) The RM usually issues their core commemorative coins (50 pence/1 pound/2 pounds/5 pounds<crown>) in both base metal (CuNi) Unc and or Proof and in Silver Proof. They even go to Gold Proof from time to time. CuNi CrownSilver CrownGold Crown

In Canada, the RCM has moved to 99.9%+ for most NCLT so that the tax (GST/HST) can be waived. Sterling is still taxable. I also believe this is the reason that the 27mm $100 gold (14K) was replaced with the 20mm $100 gold (24K 99.99%)
