I found this obvious forgery/counterfeit today on ebay ( and have reported it to ebay as such... ), this seller is not only selling American Silver Eagle knock-offs, but they are mis-representing them as professionally graded ( by NGC ), see example posting:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203689392006

Compare this fake ( look especially at fine details like face and head shape

With this genuine:

Lesson is to be careful out there, do your research, stick to vetted sellers, and watch out for scammers.

P.S. be sure to report any bad-actor activity like this to ebay, there's a button right on each item post to do so...

Thanks for your attention,
and Happy Hunting!

to CCF!

The view of the head and face isn't clear enough for me to tell if it's a problem. And the cert number, bar code, and slab image all match the one on the NGC cert verification site. Is there anything else that's suggesting to you that it's a fake ASE in a counterfeit holder?

I have no idea of what-is-what or what you have pictured here. It all may be obvious to you but it is not obvious to me.

Your ebay link takes you to a 2020 dated ASE in an NGC slab that you can't tell diddly squat about.

The two coins in your pictures are both dated 2021.

Are you saying the linked coin and the top coin in the pictures are both counterfeit?

This is the confusion that ALWAYS shows up when you post multiple coins in a thread without being clear and specific.

But anyway, to the Community!

Ok,

1st, I posted this out of a sense of 'duty' or trying to help people not to get ripped off. Not for any other reason, nor have I purchased anything from this person(s), or been ripped-off myself, I assure you this was done perfectly altruistically.

2nd, I could not post the high-resolution pics here, as there's some 300kb limit, so you'll have to look at the originals on ebay. Really, follow the links, look at the seller, look at all the other items for sale by this seller ( including knock-off gold/silver coins that they are selling to others, and what are the others doing with the fake coins? I'm GUESSING but my gut tells me they're packaging them to look like graded coins and selling them to unsuspecting coin hunters... MY OPINION - your mileage may vary...

3rd, sellers can, and often do, update item listings after sales, which may have happened with the original link I posted to an item for sale, or on the other hand, I may have messed up and posted the wrong link... who knows ( I'm old... so it happens - please forgive any mistakes made, again I assure you they were made with the best intentions... )

4th, I'll try to double-check my info as I post, so as not to make any/and/or/more mistakes.

5th, I will post more "evidence" as time permits ( again I have a day job so be patient ), starting with this 5 minute search on same seller:

item: (buy it now) 2014 ( W ) American Silver Eagle $1 PCGS MS70 Struck at West Point Mint
https://www.ebay.com/itm/203585136950

Please, just look carefully at the NOSE shape / angle in the following 2 coins/items,
( if you follow the hi-res link for each it's easier to see, the images I can attach here are limited ):

link to original hi-res image on ebay for (IMHO fake coin):
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/x~4A.../s-l1600.jpg

300kb limited head shot (IMHO fake coin):

comparable item: (chosen at random, no this isn't mine, no I'm not paid to link to any of this)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/224400057465

link to original hi-res image on ebay for COMPARABLE ITEM SAME DATE/MINT:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/TJIA.../s-l1600.jpg

300kb limited head shot ( real coin ):

Ok, so that took me about 15 minutes that I'll never get back, so if you take a good long look at those 2 supposedly same issue coins and say even that the noses are the same, I'll shut up and move on... because honestly, I'm only trying to help and now I feel like I'm having to defend myself here, not my intention, and not my idea of a good time...

And in the end, I'm not saying that I'm not wrong, I'm not saying that I'm perfect, but even with my old eyes, I can see a difference in the quality of these coins... and I hope that you can too, and are not ever a victim in this or any other scam.

Thanks for your time, be safe out there, take the time to REALLY look at what you're buying online, and as always Happy Hunting!

I'm honestly not seeing anything wrong with that coin, either. No one is accusing you of anything other than honorable intentions, and I applaud your desire to alert buyers to potential fraud. I think the problem is that different lighting angles and photo techniques can change the appearance of the details of even the exact same coin. The barcode below the hologram on the reverse of that PCGS slab matches the certification number of the coin, and it's a legit number on the PCGS site, so I think it's likely that it's genuine.

But I agree with your general premise that you really have to be careful buying coins on ebay, even slabbed coins, because of the large numbers of fakes out there. People post here about counterfeit coins listed on ebay all the time, and often the listings get removed by @bobby131313 and his contacts. So feel free to continue posting suspicious coins, because it's always good to try to make ebay a safer place.

I never brought any books home from school in my day but I see a legitimate ASE encapsulated in a genuine slab here.
Have you had issues with this seller in the past?

If your going to post a long winded thread at least present a coin that is a counterfeit, none of the coins posted are.

I see what you're saying about the difference between the two faces. This seller peddled over 30 fake 1/2 oz gold eagles that were listed as fake but not marked as such. Myself, I would never trust and buy anything from this seller. If they're buying fake gold eagles from China why not the ASE's as well.

I can appreciate your act of altruism, however, (if they are indeed fakes) I should think you would get better results to report it to NGC rather than ebay. I get the feeling ebay cares only about collecting their fees.
