Poll Question
I am going to be a first time submitter to a TPG and trying to choose one to use. I have a few PCGS graded coins and I like their clear holder vs. NGC white holders. What do others prefer?

Does any TPG command more of a premium if a coin is in their holder?

Do the first strike and related designations command a premium or is it just a gimmick for the TPG to make more money?

Are there any other aspects I am sure I am not considering?

Thanks all

I've only used ANACS and I'm impressed. I would not use NGC, they are the ones I disagree most with the grades. PCGS is the most accurate but expensive. Since I haven't slabbed expensive coins I haven't used them.

In terms of what I own, the majority are NGC followed by ANACS and then PGCS.

But I buy the coin not the grader.

My collection consists of only Pre-33 gold. I only buy PCGS (and usually only CAC) coins. I have seen a lot of overgraded NGC gold coins. I am sure others feel the same with PCGS. I will say when a dealer told me that after a gold submission to PCGS did not bring the results they wanted they would submit to NGC to get better grades.

I prefer PCGS over NGC.
They seem to get a slightly higher selling value over NGC coins.
Plus their clear slabs make it easier to photograph coins than the white inserts of the NGC slabs.
But as an ANA member I don't have to pay for NGC membership which saves that much money.

I don't slab inexpensive (<$150) coins so I ignore ANACS.

Depends on what I'm submitting. Different price points, different series go to different TPGs. I have a submission at all 3 currently.

ANACS typically isn't going to get any high dollar items (<$200), nothing against them, but if the day comes to move things around, in general they command less of a premium. I just recently started using them, and like hfjacinto, I was impressed. If anything I feel they were conservative in most I have sent in. Best customer service of the 3 IMO. Bonus points: number of varieties they attribute.

PCGS is usually the go to (>$200). I do feel they are the most consistent, in general command the highest prices. But I have also seen plenty of what I feel to be over and undergraded coins. Nature of the beast, when your paying for a "professional opinion". These are also my favorite holders.

NGC I used to use more often, but have recently gone more to PCGS. I still use NGC for world coins however, but haven't done much of that lately.

I'm also guilty of bouncing between two. I've had "cleaned" coins come back from NGC, cracked out and went PCGS and straight graded. And vice versa. Same with ANACS.

Also, first strike..... total gimmick IMO. They, for whatever reason, seem to command a premium, but not one I'll ever be a part of.

The only thing I can say is at coin shows I always hear dealers say "Of course it cost more, it's in a PCGS slab".
