If the Mint really wanted to make these coins non-collectable, or at least less attractive to collectors, they should remove the date and continue to strike them, undated, for the next decade. They should also scrap their plans to use a bunch of different colours. Collectors will always want to collect the "different things", so reducing the number of different things to collect will reduce the number collected.

But they won't - because the Mint doesn't rally care what happens to coins once they're issued and out in circulation. And, since each coin is still profitable to make, the more they need to make, the more profit the mint generates for the government. Coins removed from circulation by hoarders and collectors are going to need to be replaced, and replacing coins is profitable. So they're not going to really do anything to discourage that.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

If the mint was smart, they should have done a charity auction and let the first few boxes sales proceeding go to charity. That way everyone wins.

Who knows. Maybe in 10 years time when individual coins are fetching $100 we'll be kicking ourselves. Probably not though.
Still, for coins going into circulation wth many keen collectors on the lookout, I would have thought someone may have seen just one coin to date. Are they being collected and flogged on ebay before they even get to the banks?

The mint should have sold them all at face value to charities, who could then flog them for $15 each, thereby getting far more than they are likely to get now.

Haha. I knew they'd show up on ebay pretty quickly.

Knew to just depend on whether the mint care enough to stop this sort of silliness, I mean seriously 306 plus 22 that's 328 for something that's face value is only 20 and to think they will be donated good luck trying 1 coin for every Australian I don't think so. Right now even changeover bag would past that but only by a bit and that's with the lowest mintage for a 1dollar coin .....

I also wonder if mints realize when calculating mintage numbers that they are supplying a global market now. Collectors like myself will also keep a few extra for swapsies with collectors over seas.

Yep, prices are dropping, but still haven't heard of any found in circulation for (gasp) face value. They can't have all been grabbed by the ebayers? Will be interested to know which state they first turn up in among loose change.

Q: 'Donation Dollar' coins are being sold via online dealers and other groups at
increased prices. Can the Mint stop this?

A: While it is tempting to want to collect this coin, please remember that it is designed to
be donated to help those who need it most, at a time when most Australians are doing it
tough. The more Donation Dollars out there, the more opportunities there are for people
to come across them in their change and donate them.

I'm not sure if this was in the RAM's original FAQ but I guess their short answer is NO!
