Found some interesting foreign coins and NCLT.

Some interesting coins!

How some of these managed to get into circulation make it a mystery...

Still yet to process the color 2 dollar coins that I found in circulation...

A Rather Obscure Russian Silver 5 Kopek (Two Year Type)

Came across this coin that I have been looking for quite some time. This is one of those obscure silver 5 kopek that was struck for only two years (1859 - 1860). Total mintage is a mere 140k ish, making this challenging to complete silver 5 kopek type set.

I don't know why the design is so short lived. It's a nice eagle design.

I've been neglecting this Imperial Russian silver type set (1802 - 1917) for a while. The last time I updated this was perhaps back in 2019!

http://gxseries.com/numis/rus_imper...802_1917.htm

Many of them were from a time when prices are a lot more reasonable. If I said I bought a silver ruble less than 50-100 dollars, you'd think I'm pulling your leg. Shipping cost were not as obscene as today, let alone absurd taxes on everything. Might attempt to fill one every year. Most are achievable with the exception of the earlier smaller denomination coins...

Please feel free to post silver Russian coins from this era!

These aren't the modern Chinese high quality counterfeit.
Instead they look like contemporary Chinese counterfeits that circulated. Pretty crude

I'm sure there are a lot more examples. Please feel free to post yours!

When you mean chop coins, do you mean chopmark Chinese coins?

There are flea markets but it's one of those buyers beware places. Counterfeits are very bad even 20+ years ago. Who knows how bad they are today.

LOL @ frequent flyer.

Honestly it feels that coin collecting is getting very restrictive. You cannot even mail a single coin in a normal mail to some countries as their metal detector machine is getting a bit too effective.

Sel - very interesting points. I did some extra research and found a lot of good materials to read.

News article about Sydney Mint's assayer (William Jevons)
https://www.smh.com.au/national/tal...-gdngzq.html

What stumped me is the following. Sydney Mint was a branch of the Royal Mint - all the technology and even the assayer would have been British. How was this issue not raised during the first few years of operation in Sydney? Perhaps the gold-silver vs gold-copper impure alloy may have played a role. Any metallurgist in the forum?

I'm speculating that this gold may have originated from Hillgrove. Timing can't be that much closer. Would be interesting if there is scientific study on this!

Was reading about an uncommon British gold sovereign which was only struck for one year in 1859. Turns out this was struck with Australian gold, however the composition is rather unusual.

Gold with lead, antimony and arsenic? That is pretty interesting! The impurities made the gold 'brittle'. Supposedly the gold source is from NSW. I wonder from what area?

If this was an issue for the British mint, how did Sydney mint struck its first gold sovereign in 1855? Or gold was sourced from different parts of the country?

Do NOT use acetone to remove the enamel!!!

Can't tell much about authenticity but it does look odd.

Got some at a coin fair recently. RAM had a booth that let you exchange coloured 2 dollar at face value. Oddly enough, they did have some older 2 dollar colored coins too!

This is a very common coin, in fact most likely the largest mintage of this type. This is plagued with counterfeits.

Didn't think too much about it until I looked at it closer
