I know members here (and people elsewhere) have mixed feelings about purchasing coins on ebay. ( Even one of my two local dealers will be loving a coin I show him until I mention ebay). Of course, It's Buyer beware on ebay (just like anywhere else). So, What is the Best Score/Deal you've gotten from ebay (or other online venue)? Here is one of mine (also some of my lowest mintage coins at 51,386).

Nice score! My best ones were: 1). An uncirculated 1899 $1 Black Eagle Star Note sold as a non-Star BIN for $150; 2) a roll of 1938-D BU roll of Buffalo nickels for 400$ ...half of them turned out to be D over S; and most recently a 2008 $10 proof Gold Buffalo in original packaging for 600$.

The best deal I got was probably an 1803 Half Cent, about G / VG, for $30.

An auction lot of mixed junk and some silver, what it was bought for, only $7.50. The Canadian 50c turned out to be the 1870 no LCW variety, worth @ $150 in that condition.

Nice one Crazy! Here's another one of mine. I actually bought 9 lots from this guy over a 2 day period. This was the best one at 15.3 ounces of sterling for $20.

I've had a number. Top that come to mind: - Mixed lot of ancients bought for about $1.25 each contained a rare and historically significant coin of Herod Antipas, worth several hundred: http://goccf.com/t/296050&SearchTerms=antipasLot also contained a "Widow's mite" type prutah ($50+) and some other scarcer coins. - Lot of world junk bin coins (like $6 shipped) contained a contemporary counterfeit French 10 Centimes, "1810 A" which is not an extant combination on real coins. Apparently worth about $75-100. - Lot of "cull" ancients (20 for $5 shipped) contained a prutah of Pontius Pilate; worn but still worth $20+ - Bought a job lot of Greek silver fractions in a Classical Numismatic Group auction a few months ago; 20 coins for $200. One coin alone is worth $150, and several others are worth $50-100 each.

Nice score! My best purchase on ebay was this crusty old gal. I got outbid on great collections, then found it on ebay almost a year later and for $150 cheaper!

My best snag (with some luck) was a 1999 proof set with a Close AM cent: http://goccf.com/t/281916&whichpage=3#2399828I ended up reselling the set for around $90. Here's another minor one that I was proud of: It was the DDR and I sold it for more than double what I paid. Small profit, but I got to see a true doubled die early on and made a few bucks off of it.

Another one: When I was focused on my Japanese type set, I noticed two "face value/exchange" type listings from the same seller for modern Japanese 50, 100, and 500 yen. I bought and won both for a little under exchange (1¥ = roughly 1 cent). The 50 yen were a complete year set from 1958-1986 in BU (including older types and a key date). The 100 yen were mostly BU, and included multiple commemoratives, including 3 ¥500 that the seller counted as ¥100. The ¥500 lot contained nearly all commemoratives from 1985 to the 1998 Olympics, most BU, most types worth 2-3x what I paid. Images of some of my keepers here: http://goccf.com/t/304752#2609052Moral of the story: Research before you sell!

My two best both came from ebay auctions with a fuzzy photo. I purchased, what was advertised as an AU 1857 Flying Eagle cent, for $122 a few years back. It look a lot nicer when I received it, so I sent it to NGC where it was graded MS-63. I also won a small Roman bronze of the later usurper Eugenius for one euro from a seller in Spain on ebay. I put it up on ebay and it sold within an hour for $300. I could use more of those deals.

I've gotten some good deals on groups of coins. Most people do not look very closely at dates and condition of coin lots and assume most silver coin lots should sell as junk silver. Its not always so. If I were the seller of that 1950 proof set and ran an auction starting at $9.95 and that's what it sold at, I would never list an auction on ebay again.
