I made a forum where I sadly found that I misread my detector, thinking there was silver when there was just clad. I brought my detector over to our other property. The house on the property is from the 1890s, so this is a better place for detecting in general. I first got very discouraged, as my first hole yielded a nail and a metal bracket. But then, no more than 10 minutes later, I dug my first wheat ever! (194?) Then not more than 10 minutes 2 feet away, I find my first ever 100+ year old coin!! (A 1913 wheat)

This makes up for EVERYTHING!

Just don't dig where the outhouse used to be...might be some "roll hunting" there!

A friend of mine would try and find out where the outhouse was at. He collected bottles and there was always plenty to be found. The bottles would always be intact because they had a soft landing. he would also find coins, but that was a by-product for him and he didn't use a metal detector since he was after bottles. When an outhouse as been gone for 60 years, the remains are not all that "toxic".

We would take our students on a field trip to the sewage treatment plant as part of their environmental science class. There was a few smelly parts of the plant but the end product had been processed, dried and ready to be loaded on to a dump truck. Still thought, when the plant manager picked up a handful to show everyone, the students all backed up and he was on his own.
