I stumbled on a 1764 II Pfenning coin from the Free Imperial City of Augsburg, and I like the look of it, but I know nothing about these coins. Anybody know about them/care to share?

Here in Germany, you'd actually have to pay a bit more. In VF condition it can be up to 20 - 25 €.

It appears to be the 2nd smallest denomination of Augsburg coins.

By the way, there are 2 different types for 1764 2 Pfennig. The one that has been mentioned above and another type, that is missing the STADTMYNZ in the legend.

Best regards from Berlin

Thanks!! The one I'm looking at is graded XF 45, and is nicely toned (sort of blue-green), and it's the second type. They're asking $68. I guess the little bit extra is worth it for the eye appeal.

LOL. I keep talking myself into it and back out. With Christmas gifts this month, the budget is pretty tight, and I already bought a Peace dollar, so I really ought to quit.

On the other hand, you could buy it and show us the pics!

Man, you're messing with my discipline!!

It is super tempting, but I'm already on track to be carrying a balance on my visa into next month, and I don't like to do that. Maybe if someone gives me money to buy a coin for Christmas, I can get this one if its still there on 12/26. Fingers crossed.

Even if the coin will be sold by then the "German States" section on ebay is filled with beautiful minors. Sometimes I regret collecting only coins from Brandenburg/Prussia because there are so many beautiful coins from that era with so many different stylistic variations.

Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

Thanks! One reason I posted this thread is that I wanted to know how rare this coin is. I figured from the pricing it couldn't be TOO rare, but NGC had a 0 population report, so I wanted to check. If it was really unusual I might have been willing to dig a little. The toning probably IS unusual, but if the coin itself isn't, sooner or later another nice one will come along.

I guess the numbers of NGC and PCGS population reports for German coins are not significant.

Here in Germany, the vast majority of collectors does not even think about getting coins slabbed and graded. People here rather tend to crack the slabs open if they come across one. You could for instance check WAG online auction and you'd see, that not even 1 % of the German coins are graded.

So even if pop reports say there is no graded specimen of a coin this doesn't necessarily mean that there arent thousands of pieces in collections here in Germany.

Still, simply the price of this coin here in Germany suggests some kind of scarcity (at least compared to other German States minors).

Another reason for scarce coins to be rather cheap is a lack of collectors that are interested in that certain field of numismatics. Even a mintage of 5000 for a certain coin wouldnt matter if there are only 5 people out there collecting such stuff.

LOL. I really do need to work on the discipline. I just decided to get it. There are a few other II Pfennings on ebay and Vcoins, but none are as nice as this one, and I am a sucker for beautiful toning, even if that is just a fad.

Plus, I figure that even if nobody in the family gives me coin money, I will likely get a couple gift cards, which I can use to offset some expenses and thus avoid carrying a balance...

Amazing the way we can justify these things, isn't it?

Anyway, here's the dealer's image of the coin in question. BTW, I noticed the same dealer had it on ebay for quite a bit more than on Vcoins. IS that a common thing? Why?

Feel free to tell me I got a less than wonderful deal. I do like the coin anyway.
