Hello!
I live in the fort lauderdale area in south florida. The town is just a bit older than a 100 years. Most of the place is a city or beach and I want to find a place where there might be something.
I own a fisher F2 and go to the beach and get some modern change equaling about a dollar in an hour. I am looking to find a good metal detecting site where I can find relics, which is not protected by any branch of goverment (like national parks, state parks, historic homes)

Should I use google earth? it only goes to the late 80s...

Also what discrimantion should I turn on. I turn off "tab","iron" and "foil"

If you want to find gold, you need to dig those pulltabs. Other relics could show up above iron in the foil range, so you might want to have that setting on. Other than that, I really can't help you out except for talk to the residents around you, get some leads and permissions, and check out libraries. Sometimes they have stuff.

Keep in mind that for every discrimination setting, you will lose depth.
If you are into relics, use "all metal".

Here are my top three spots for old coins and relics:

1) Old yards
2) Older ballfields
3) Older fairgrounds.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72

if you can get on to an older house site then do it, great variation and privacy too.

Take a look at some 100 year old topo maps for your area, match those up with newer ones and find the missing buildings and detect those foundations and surrounding area. Most of these maps are free to save to the computer, great for google map overlays as well.

most of us use a 10 inch coil to cover more ground faster. discriminate only iron for the best finds. newer detectors have automatic ground fault which makes you quicker. use your highest sensitivity setting. use head phones for courtesy and better battery mileage.
and last but not least, go where there have been many people in the past. beaches after storms, construction sites after grading, plowed fields, etc. always get permission. listen for the high tones and make sure you dig the faint signals. silver and gold comes up in the same condition it was dropped. neatly re fill your holes so we may continue.
do not have a hear attack when you dig up your first 18 karat mans gold ring with 5 diamonds on it or a 1916 d mercury. most coins dropped were not known to be rare. remember to clean up behind yourself put the bottle caps in your nail apron. you are an ambassador of our hobby. I already know you will enjoy.

I agree with chzman. Research old local maps & look for crossroads. Travelling merchants & gypsies often camped at intersections of old roads to pedal wares. Also ask around at museums, there are knowledgeable folks that can point you in the direction of razed communities. If your detector is waterproof... Check shallow waters during low tide. You'd be surprised at what a little surf will pull out.

HistoricMapWorks, David Rumsey, OSHER Map Library. There's a few good sites. Historic aerials as well. But the library often has a local history section and usually a historic maps archive. I live in midcoast Maine and we have history going back to 1607. If you dig deep enough you will find some great old sites. I set my disc at 0 and dig everything. I can't stand wondering if I missed a good target.

Research, research, research absolute number one thing to do during the winter months to set up the agenda for the coming season. I check the local river and lake water tables for low times, past and present camps-be it mining, logging, construction, past and present fairgrounds, past and present remote party places and permissions to go with some of the above. I run a ATGOLD and try to keep my disc 30ish on disc 1 for coins and jewelry, and I NEVER leave a sign that I was there that being the key to our MD-in future. Cheers.
