Any book suggestions for coin info, history, and general stuff about the older commemorative coins?

Thanks!
Rest in Peace

One of CCF members, "Commems" has posted here a number of times.
He is one of the best if not, "best" knowledgable person here on Commemorative Coins.
Not sure how you can find all of his post. It would be worth a look to see the history he presented on the many different Commemoratives.
Maybe a Mod or others could help out.

I don't know if this is allowed, but I discovered this free copy online.

For a physical copy you might want "A Guide Book of United States Commemorative Coins" By Q. David Bowers (2007)

The above book is one I haven't added to my library yet.

One of my favorites is "Encyclopedia of United States Silver and Gold Commemorative Coins 1892-1954" by Anthony Swiatek et. al. The writing style and format of the book is quirky, but very informative. It's out of print, but you can find copies online for less than $25 (it's a huge book).

I agree with the comments above that commem's posts are AMAZING.

Pleased to learn of your interest in acquiring knowledge of what we know as the 'classic silver series' ... minted from 1892 to 1954.

I have several books on the series ... IMHO the most accessible and useful as a general learning tool and daily reference is the paper back ' Red Book' version published by Whitman.

Titled "A Guide Book of United States Commemorative Coins" ... authored by Q David Bowers ... this handy collectors guide kept me awake in my early days of knowledge acquisition ... and still today provides a ready reference for the history and facts behind the coins.

It can be found on-line and at any major coin show ... most B&M dealers also carry it. It will be the best $20 you spent in pursuit of these coins.

There are of course more in-depth volumes available ... the Rad Book guide I mention above is essentially a scaled down version of Bowers hard back 1991 encyclopedia of commemorative coins ... but who now-a-days needs an encyclopedia?

The ultimate book on classic silver commemorative has yet to be written ... truly ... the world's greatest numismatist on this series is none other that our CCF resident expert commems.

I sincerely encourage you to read everything and anything that commems has posted on the CCF ... that would be a good start until his book comes out.

The Red Book mentioned above will fill the hole until commems agrees to write the book.

Welcome again to the wonderful world of commemorative.

David

If you can get hold of the May 2004 issue of COINage magazine (Volume 40 No. 5) there is an interesting and very detailed article in it by Tom DeLorey about Classic Commemoratives. It really sparked my interest in the series.

First, a VERY big "Thanks!" to all for the kind words about my CCF contributions, and "Thanks!" jbuck for creating a link to a list of my past commemorative posts. I've enjoyed writing my posts - it's always nice to hear that they have been useful/enjoyable to folks.

@themankg: I echo nickelsearcher's recommendation regarding picking up a copy of Whitman's A Guide Book of United States Commemorative Coins by Q. David Bowers. It is a very informative yet compact reference for the series. If more depth is desired, I would suggest either Bowers' comprehensive A Complete Encyclopedia or one of Anthony Swiatek's books - either is a solid choice.

I continue to be a student of the series and continue to gather lesser known information about the coins. Who knows what ultimately will become of my research? Stay tuned!

You made it easy by putting "Commems Collection:" at the beginning of every subject line.
