Not sure what you mean when you say you opened a case, Should be an easy, "return requested - Item not as described."

I think it's a good purchase. The amount of detail on the reverse eagle and shield makes me think it's graded appropriately. Neat pickup!

Those are some great coins - I love the hint of color on the Columbian.

I think your goal is very achievable. It's not a set that you'll assemble overnight, but you can build it over time. When I started building my commem set, I called it my "20-year" set, now after just about 4 years, I lack 3 coins. You'll be in the right place at the right time and get some great coins. Along the way, you'll see some great pieces that many collectors don't see.

I'd recommend finding a copy of the Swiatek volume on these coins.

NGC took some liberty deciding which side to place in the front of the slab. There were a couple more MS 65* coins in the batch. I'll try to add some more pics.

Thought I'd share a couple of photos - these are fresh from NGC with nice STAR designations. The reverses were blast white. These were stored in rolls tightly wrapped in newsprint for decades.

I say, "No good." The hind legs should appear moth-eaten. The Indian's neck and forehead should have more chatter. I wouldn't buy it. Just my five cents.

So there are currently Lexington-Concorde Half Dollars available with the original wooden boxes. I think they provide a good contrast. I think one is fake, one is legit (the box, mind you... I think both coins are legit). But I offer them here for discussion.

The ink of the stamp should be blue, not black. The date should be imprinted into the box, not stamped on top (they both pass this test). Normally, the original pine (not balsa) box had a PVC-like effect on the coin. The seller of the BU coin claims the coin was preserved via plastic wrap.

Discuss among yourselves.

I am not opposed to slabbed coins, I have bought many and own some slabbed sets. My classic commem set is housed in a Dansco for the sake of uniformity (it's a fantastic display with accompanying stamps that I have shared part of here on the forum). I endorse slabs for the sake of resale. Coins I am buying for investment stay in their slabs.

I hear everything you are saying about authentication. I would need to be certain about a coin this pricey.

Sorry about the photo size. The forum usually resizes them to fit my screen. Try these...

I often call my collection of classic commems my "Twenty-Year Set" because I figure it will take 20 years to budget and locate the coins to fill the set. It is a raw set of white(-ish) coins in uncirculated condition.

This week, my Twenty-Year Set became a Ten-Year Set with the addition of the Spanish Trail half dollar. Not the toughest in the set, but one of the big three (along with Hudson and Hawaii). I had not been actively seeking this coin, in fact, I figured my next big purchase would be an Antietam to accompany my Gettysburg. But this raw mint state coin fell into my lap. And the photos tell the rest of the story. (Sorry the quality's not better.)

Gary Powers said in his autobiography that he was issued a half dollar on a necklace that hid a needle with enough poison to commit suicide if he chose to use it. He said upon his capture he realized what a foolish hiding place it was - what better souvenir than an American half dollar taken from an American pilot. Powers said when he saw a Soviet official draw it from a briefcase, he quickly explained what it was out of fear someone would discover the secret and hurt or kill themselves! He figured that would put him in an even worse predicament.

Sorry, just doubling. I've run across similar doubling once. It's frustrating after looking at 100s of 1942s finally finding SOMETHING only to see it's NOTHING.

Here's another idea (which I stole from someone else on this board): in my Eisenhower Dansco, the 4 empty slots are filled with an UNC and Proof Eisenhower commemorative dollar (1990) and an UNC and Proof 5-Star General commemorative dollar featuring Eisenhower. If you're making slots for the golden presidential dollars, I think these coins should be included too.

It is very unlikely that Texas is going to spend a billion dollars build a "New Fort Knox" in Texas, more than likely, they will sub-contract the storage to someone like Provident Metals or Dillon-Gage , who are based in Dallas and already have secure PM storage facilities
That's what I'm predicting

Here's my input...

Well, let's think through what could happen. Could all that crazy machinery at the mint create that damage? Probably. What would happen afterwards? That coin found its way into a roll... could happen. Looking at the wear on it, it's been spent and used since the late 90's until someone said, "hey! this dime is messed up!"... less likely.

Another option: that coin has been working for over 15 years now, gaining the wear we see on it, when it got into a bad scrape. Drug across concrete, got run over, something. Then, you came across it!

The strike under the defect appears complete (LIBERTY is fully struck), so whatever happened occurred after the coin left the die machine.

I can't find their original statement, so I don't know if this is likely to impact Gettysburg halves, for example.
